[...] We may have complained quite a lot before and after RC1 was released, but don’t let that mislead you, RC1 is good. Really good for a product that just a month ago was a complete and utter disaster as far as usability and stability were concerned. This review focuses on all aspects of RC1, which after all is the first real look at what we’re going to end up getting. What makes this review a bit different from our previous reviews is a more on-the-spot focus about the good and the bad. It’s a mega-review, it features subjective and objective tests, and every step of the way we’ll be giving our feedback about what works and what doesn’t. You can go ahead and press the next page link and read it from start to finish or you can use the mini-ToC below; each section is more or less independent of the rest. [...]

I have played with Beta 2 and now have been running RC1 since Monday (9/11). There are still a few quirks in the system to be sure but most seem to be driver related and that's not entirely Microsoft's fault.

What I find disappointing, having used it for a few days as my production system, is that once you get past the pretty face it's really nothing revolutionary. I like some of the new Explorer features. Icons and dialogs have moved around and such but basically that's just going to take some time to get used to.

Application compatibility is a problem but again that's to be expected. The same thing happened with apps in the past. The compatiblity wizard DOES help but not in all cases. Enterprise apps and games seem to be the big problems. General productivity apps don't have a big problem. Of course I'm running the Office 2007 beta also (love it).

I've been using RC1 for 1 week now. The comments made by the author of this article are FAR from the truth. Vista is been rock solid with a beatiful GUI. I did not experienced any of the problems the author did. All device drivers were detected and installed correctly on my Alienware Senta M3200 laptop. The best feature of Vista is the plentyfull information it gives you. The wireless connections is just awesome. Works flawsly on all Ap I conencted and give me full details on the connection. Bloatware? What is he talking about? Perhaps he only wants to bloat the website traffic ;-) Reminds me of the review that pc magazine did and the first thing they check was "compatibility" by running a windows 95 game to see if vista will handle it! Is that retarded? Vista RC1 is prime time ready. I will be switching my office desktop to it next week and looking forward to the final release. Just make sure you have a good graphics card and you are fine.
my 2 cents

What about the TCP? has it got better? The last I read was the symantec report which highlighted a few problems including being vunrable to old exploits. To me this seems a big issue. How have Microsoft responded to this?

No, he's right.... This isn't the most serious stuff in the world, and here's why:

We didn't have time for a full review, and we were overly harsh, because this late in the game, Vista should be perfect, and it's more important to focus on the bad than the good before Vista is released. This is the time when Microsoft pays attention to complaints and attempts to fix things that go wrong. Things like the wireless performance (which you didn't comment on) are very important since they offer an incentive to remain on XP, where wireless performance is OK.

Vista is good, we're duly impressed, and we'll have a real review up shortly. That said, yes, we are focusing on the bad in these "mini-reviews" because that's what matters more right now. Make sense?

It's an RC for God's sake, it's supposed to be perfect!

The way it is with every other program out there (including Internet Explorer!) is "We're going to release this build no matter what unless you find a major bug that we didn't see before."

It's supposed to be complete. It's good, like they said, but it's not perfect. And it's supposed to be!

If that's all the bad points for an OS release with dozens of new features, kudos to Microsoft! (It seems your headline is designed to attract readers more than reflect content).

Seems that you're fishing for things to complain about.

First, the "bloat" you refer to, yet fail to specify and resort to citing another blog entry, is (according to the blog you cite) a bunch of old icons and bitmaps in the Windows directory from previous versions of Windows. Who cares? I recall that iTunes had WMA icons in its resource fork eventhough it hasn't to this day supported WMA. So there's some "useless" icons and bitmaps. Big deal.

Second, regarding buggy video drivers? That's common for a new OS. It'll obviously be fixed, but it in no way means that there's a "really long way to go".

Third, you don't like the UI of the Networking Center. Oh well, but that doesn't translate to "a really long way to go" either, not by a long shot.

The synchronization problem is legit (I accept your word on that as I've not tried it).

When I saw "A Really Long Way to Go", I expected to read about constant crashes, horrible performance, etc, not these easily fixed and easily ignored matters. Sure there is some polishing to do, but you don't back up your headline of "a really long way to go".

First, the “bloat” you refer to, yet fail to specify and resort to citing another blog entry, is (according to the blog you cite) a bunch of old icons and bitmaps in the Windows directory from previous versions of Windows. Who cares? I recall that iTunes had WMA icons in its resource fork eventhough it hasn’t to this day supported WMA. So there’s some “useless” icons and bitmaps. Big deal.

His long term reviews are always the same, pick an early development version, pick faults, say the the future is bleak for Microsoft and that people should not use the new product. Then Get the version which appears to be the last one before release, review that and find, no problems, previous problems fixed, everything runs sweet, it is the best thing since sliced bread, how can we work without the latest offering from Microsoft. Can we not ban all "articles", (read ADVERTS), from this guy ? Please ? Pretty Please ? Pretty Please with sugar on ? and so on and so forth…… 2 RepliesReply Score: 3 RE: why why why ? By Eugenia on 2006-09-03 21:18:07 UTC in reply to “why why why ?”His review was just fine. So no, his articles won’t get banned. If you would like to seriously review Vista too, be my guest, we will also link yours. To clariffiy this is OS news: which funny enough brings news about OSes. Vista is an up an coming OS that has just reached RC1 stage, Paul Thurrott, despite his MS fanboyism at least does a comphesive review of the system even if is bias to certain points, but hey, arnt we all bias to our fav OSes? Im not having ago but please can we all stop this having ago at everything MS does because they are the biggest software company in the world. Maybe in 20 years time if Ubuntu Linux or OS 11.5 was number one we will have "not another ubuntu/apple article!!!" postings instead. Lets all stop our fanboyism and observe the news… 2 RepliesReply Score: 2 RE[2]: why why why ? By raver31 (1.76) on 2006-09-03 21:26:54 UTC in reply to “RE: why why why ?”that is not what I said, or meant, Thurrott reviews are all multi parters… first parts are the product is shit, full of bugs… later the product is the best ever, no problems whatsoever his reviews always use this fashion it does not matter what system he is reviewing, it just happens to be Windows. I like to keep up with news about all OS’s, but you are correct, the fanboys need slapped, and Thurrott should be first in the line. 0 RepliesReply Score: 3 hmm By Tomasz Dominikowski (1.63) on 2006-09-03 21:42:04 UTCAccording to Paul Windows Vista is shaping up to be a good operating system afterall. That is a good thing. I wouldn’t want to see all the XP users suffer another few years using a half a decade old os. Why suffer? Think about it. Some people, after seeing that Vista is a piece of crap would stay with XP. Welcome back to 2001. Some other people would upgrade to Vista and suffer using a piece of crap os. That leaves about 4 (four) people switching to *nix if Vista would turn out to be piece of crap. Yes that last sentence is a flamebait for immature readers or humour-impaired people. It’s just a sad insider joke, because I am in the business and I know how people use their computers and how do they perceive them. Rant: On one day me and my collegue went to deliver a computer to a family (I work at a computer shop and do all the things associated with this type of job, building new OEM systems, fixing them, that kind of stuff), it was the first computer they ever had. The kids were of course screaming with happiness and jumping all over the place as I was unpacking the computer (turned out to be the one I was building an hour earlier, a real beauty, I give all my heart to this, despite the fact that no-one but us will see the inside of the chassis and it is fine art to make everything perfect, and yes you may find it funny). Once everything was set in place I powered it on. The happy chime of Windows XP’s welcome sound filled the air. "What do we do with this now?" – their mother asked. She met my blank stare as in a split of a second I thought about all the horror they’ll have to go through to make their eXPerience a pleasure. Thank God I installed Firefox. I quickly regained my composure and said: "Well I think the kids know best". We left and from then on I realised what is very obvious. XP is the computer. Anything else is alien. We impose a system upon the users, because it costs a lot of money and breaks down often for people who are ignorant about computers, which makes even more money for the computer shop where I work, because we don’t fix issues for free. I mean, why would we want to choose anything else? That’s business, harsh but true. But, to conclude, at least Vista will make the computing experience more tolerable for everyone, especially for the beginners. Tomasz, a Linux user. 0 RepliesReply Score: 2 speed issues with Vista By buff (1.65) on 2006-09-03 21:49:00 UTCI thought it was concerning that only in the release candidate was Vista close to running at Windows XP speeds. Hmm. So, a new OS that takes 5 years to develop now runs your applications slower. It is just me or is this a problem? I am mostly a linux guy but I keep XP around to run games and run Turbo Tax. It doesn’t look like if I upgrade I would be getting a performance increase.
