[...] Well, it’s official at any rate. Contrary to what you’ve heard, Windows Vista will not be shipping with any of the original technologies, features, capabilities, or subsystems originally promised. First it was the real Aero – complete visual control over one’s system. Amazing graphics, sidebars that were a part of the Windows Core, Aero Diamond. Then it was NGSCB and its amazing security features – not DRM, but total privacy control; your privacy. Monad. Last we heard, it was WinFS, the king-pin feature that was promised to change the way you think of data… And now the last one is gone: Microsoft Max is dead. [...]

<!--%kramer-ref-pre%-->[...] WinFS is dead. Again. Not that again, this again. http://neosmart.net/blog/archives/200Pardon me while I reminisce about an earlier, less sullied time. About 10 years ago, when myself and many of my online acquantinces were doggedly chasing reporters and reviewers, and demanding that they stop taking what Microsoft claimed to be coming, at face value. Reminding them repeatedly of the promises made years before. That the deliveries hadn't come CLOSE to the promises and that the promises kept moving down the road.WinFS *originally* was OFS. Promised in '92 to be delivered by '94. Ballmer hizzelf was the promiser. '94. Cairo. Was going to change everything you thought about computers. Here we are, 2006. 12 years after the promised delivery. 14 after the promise. No OFS. Windows has gone though multiple permutations. "NT", which was just starting to compile after Microsoft broke from IBM's working OS/2, has since been reworked radically no less than 4 times - and reportedly, they _finally_ threw the code out and re-wrote from the ground up for "Longhorn". (Remember, Microsoft's story doesn't always match up, so if the code looks familiar, I won't be surprised.).The Road to Cairo. Used to trade a lot of messages with Nick. He was the least-swayed by all the Microsoft hype, back in the day. His reporting on Windows 95, and proving that huge gobs of code were ripped out between the beta and release, replaced with older 16 bit code reportedly infuriated Gates. (But were true, and verified). But if you are looking for a much better idea, check out the ReiserFS file system. The file system that Hans Reiser proposes is similar to OFS in one respect: Both are vaporware. But Reiser's vaporware is better than any I've seen in this category. This article was written in 2002. ReiserFS .9.0 was released into beta test January 5, 2003. Reiser is now up to version 4 released. I'm running 3.6 on my production Linux servers, and my new desktop. Which is very, very, very good. From April 02, to Jan 03, Hans Reiser got a conceptual, new file system planned, programmed, and released. A year later, version 1.0 was released. 2 years to get it working. Versus 14 years of vapor.Which one got more press in the meantime? Which one was reported on, and how many stories each week breathlessly reported what Ballmer/Allchin/Gates announced was, for sure, this time, we really, really, really promise were there? So, WinFS is "dead". I know I'll see a press release soon enough touting the same promises, just a couple of years off. I just need to migrate NOW to Windows and really, truely, it'll be there! C'mon, would Microsoft lie to you? (1 Comment |Comment on this)1:28 pm [...]<!--%kramer-ref-post%-->

<!--%kramer-ref-pre%-->[...] NeoSmart Technologies has an article about WinFS in retrospect. WinFS has been 15 years in the making, and here's a look at what it could have been, and possible reasons why it didn't happen.WinFS was the last piece of the jigsaw puzzle. Anyone that is familiar with the term “Cairo” should know immediately what I’m talking about. For 15 years now, Cairo was Microsoft’s vision, almost every single decision made for the desktop operating systems came from a vision of Cairo becoming a reality, and over the years, Cairo began to take shape. Everything was in place, and only WinFS was left.At its heart was WinFS. The culmination of Bill Gate’s vision of “Information at your fingertips.” As Robert McLaws points out, it’s all about the relational file system. It means everything. If there were mythical beasts in technology, AI would be the Phoenix, and WinFS would be the Unicorn.Source: NeoSmart TechnologiesArticle: WinFS in Retrospect [...]<!--%kramer-ref-post%-->
