Hello, I was directed here by a user on another message board, and this link was recommended for correcting my stiuation... Windows Vista Recovery Disc Download The NeoSmart Files ... I am not familiar with the recovery process, and wanted to get any guidance or recommendations from anybody willing to assist. I am not completely inept with software troubleshooting, but I am far from proficient.

Originally, my goal was to uninstall Microsoft Office as it was not working. I was unable to uninstall using Vista's Programs and Features in the control panel. I found this Microsoft Support page... http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928218/en-us. I followed the instructions on this page and restarted my laptop, however I found that I still had the same problem with Microsoft Office. Now, I have the problem that my AVG won't work, and when I start the laptop it tells me that there is a problem with Pinyin IME. Other files and programs are giving me error messages now as well. I appear to have deleted files that I need. I attempted recovery using Vista System Restore wizard. Unfortunately, I deleted those files over 2 weeks ago, and the oldest system restore date listed was 3 days ago. I don't know anything about what mistakes I made as I just followed the instructions on the Microsoft Support page. I would greatly appreciate any assistance in fixing my errors. Thanks.

It's an ASUS laptop with Vista home premium pre-loaded.

Hi, I'm having a bit of an unusual problem. My brother has an Asus laptop with Windows 7. He installed Linux on the second partition which in turn installed grub so he could dual boot.

In the grub menu there was 2 choices for windows, one for the recovery partition and one for the main windows install.

He decided he wanted to remove linux and grub and accidentally ran the auto fix startup problems in the Windows 7 recovery options. Anyways after this, both options in grub now both startup the main Windows install instead of one for recovery and one for main install.

I was able to remove linux and grub and get everything working back to normal again except for one small issue. I can access the limited recovery options (F8 "repair PC") when I boot Windows on the partition but the option to boot from recovery partition (F9) to do a complete reinstall is not there.

I ran super grub and was able to boot the recovery partition but again it just boots the main Windows install on C:.

He didn't make any recovery backups but the laptop did come with a recovery DVD. I reinstalled windows using that and it worked fine except the recovery boot option was still missing and now the recovery partition is no longer hidden and is visble in Windows and has been assigned a drive letter (e).

I opened up Computer Management and see that the recovery partition is also not set as active. I am assuming this is my problem. I checked the files on the recovery partition and nothing has been altered at all.

If I just make this partition active and hide it again, and reboot, do you think this will solve my problem? Also should I change the drive letter to X:?

I would really appreciate the help, I know this issue isn't directly related to BCD, but I figured if anyone would know the answer it would be here.

Thanks

Create universal flash boot disk with fbinst

This tool can create, as I understand it, a universal flash boot disk which solves BIOS compatibility issues. It also apparently includes an integrated ntldr and ntdetect.com file.

Maybe this feature could be integrated in EasyBCD? ;)

EDIT: Or is that what the External Media | Create bootable disk option uses...? I haven't tested it yet, so I wouldn't know.

For those of you with Wubi problems, here's how to mount your root.disk, and recover your files using a LiveCD:

Boot your computer, enter your BIOS by pressing the key it tells you to press at the first splash screen you come to at startup, put the CD/DVD drive first in the boot sequence, insert your LiveCD, then save the changes, and exit your BIOS.

Your computer should now boot from the CD.

In the Ubuntu setup program, select the preferred language you use, then select the "Try Ubuntu with No Change To My Computer" option.

Once at the Ubuntu desktop, in a Live session, open up Applications->Accessories>Terminal.

Now run:

Code:

sudo fdisk -l
sudo mkdir /win
sudo mount /dev/sdxy /win
sudo mkdir /vdisk
sudo mount -o loop /win/ubuntu/disks/root.disk /vdisk

where the "x" and the "y" in "sdxy" is replaced with the correct HDD letter (starting at a of course), and the correct partition number (starting at 1), of the Windows partition your Wubi install is on. The first command will have given you the location.
Once running those commands, open up Places>Computer>Filesystem>vdisk, and you should find the contents of your root.disk in there. Now you can backup your data to external media, and reinstall Ubuntu with Wubi if you like.

You can also try running the

Code:

sudo fsck /win/ubuntu/disks/root.disk

command to fix any filesystem errors that may be interfering with the boot, if that's the problem.

Hope it helps.

Ok, this one has got me stumped. Anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it. My girl has a Dell Dimension 2400. Someone replaced all the RAM (RAM type and size is correct for mobo, etc and I doublechecked to make sure seated, cleaned, etc) and right after that the graphics that are inherent in the mobo no longer work. Hence, nothing shows up on the display until the actual log-in of Windows (XP) This means that I do not know how to debug it as none of the boot sequence shows on the monitor - no BIOS, no boot ini, etc. Nothing until the graphic card actually kicks in and the OS is loaded. Is there a way to manually clear the powered BIOS so it goes back to the original flash BIOS? I am guessing that if I could do that there is a chance that original BIOS might not contain the error that somehow developed after the RAM was replaced. Only two jumpers are the CMOS jumper and the password clear jumper. Again, thanks for any help.

Someone please help, or at least explain what's going on.
I originally built this computer with XP32 installed on two RAID1 drives, RAID setup was done using an Intel ICH7R controller on the motherboard, worked fine.
Later added Vista32 to an external SATA hard drive and would dual boot as needed, no problem. I never used Vista very much.
I decided that it was time to wean myself away from XP and start using a more up to date operating system such as Win7, in the 64bit version since that works on my laptop and I get the impression that I need a 64bit operating system to take advantage of the 4Gb memory I have installed.
I want to do a clean install of Win7 64 on the external drive, undo the RAID but keep XP on one of the drives while replacing the other drive with a 1Tb drive for data storage. I now realize I dont really have to set up a boot loader because the external drive has an on/off switch - if I set that drive up as the first one in the BIOS I can choose my operating system by simply toggling it on or off before starting the computer.
Question 1: Does this plan sound feasable?
The problem I have run into is that after turning the external drive off, resetting the internal drives to non-RAID in the Intel "Matrix Storage Manager" available during POST and setting the BIOS "Configure SATA as..." option to AHCI instead of RAID the computer booted into XP fine but after a little while gave me a message "Windows has finished installing new devices. The software that supports your device requires that you restart" etc. If I do the restart it tries to boot into XP, crashes, and reboots in an endless cycle. To get the thing to boot into XP I had to "Configure SATA" as IDE and boot into "Last known good confuguration". Luckily I can boot it up! Also the computer only shows one hard drive, why not the other one?
Question 2: what am I doing wrong? There are a lot of posts on the internet about setting up RAID but not very many about getting rid of it. Before I did this I checked the Intel website and they said it was ok to undo a RAID1 and that there wouldn't be any data loss either.
Easy question 3: I assume I use EasyBCD to get rid of the pesky XP/Vista boot menu?
I would appreciate it if someone could shed some light on these questions - sorry about the long winded exposition...

As I mentioned in another post, I am going to be setting up a triple-boot config (XP Professional, Vista Business, Windows 7 Professional) on my new home recording PC. I was originally going to use a WD VelociRaptor 150 GB HD, and put 3 partitions on it at 50 GB for each OS. I'm now considering using the 300 GB version of this VelociRaptor HD, and utilizing its considerable speed and additional storage capacity by also installing my applications on a 4th partition on it, in addition to the 3 Windows operating systems. (Separate drives will be used for data storage and backup.)
My question now is, what are the minimum "comfortable" partition sizes to establish for each OS? I'm assuming that it will be considerably less than the 50 GB per OS that I was originally going to allocate, and I'm also assuming that the answer will be different for each OS.

So, what partition size should I use individually for XP Pro, Vista Business, and Windows 7 Pro? Remember that I am looking for optimal partition sizes that will allow ample room for each OS to run without any compromises (along with necessary system file allocations), so that I can maximize the size of the 4th partition dedicated to applications.

Thanks in advance for any input that can be given concerning my question....
