International characters in boot entry name

Hello

My environment:
- Windows 7 Ultimate x86 English with Polish language added (you can do it in Windows Update if you have Ultimate edition)
- All settings in Windows are configured for Poland and Polish language
- EasyBCD 2.0 Beta build 76

International (Polish) characters in boot entry name are displayed incorrectly. They are wrong everywhere:
- View Settings
- Change Settings
- Add/Remove Entries
- Advanced Options

Interesting behavior:
- Select Change Settings
- In Name texbox write some Polish letters (they are displayed correctly)
- Save Settings
- After Save Settings screen is refreshed and I see garbage instead of Polish letters
- I can run bcdedit /enum from command prompt and Polish letters are displayed correctly

It looks that you do correct conversion before save (ANSI => OEM ???), but you don't do any conversion when you read information back (OEM => ANSI ???).

EasyBCD 1.7.2 and 2.0 beta crashing

I'm trying to dual boot Windows XP and Windows 7 on my PC on two different drives. I have Windows 7 installed, and I just formatted my Vista drive and installed XP on it. The boot loader no longer comes up, and instead my PC automatically boots into XP. I tried the 1.7.2 and last 2.0 beta versions of EasyBCD and whenever I try and add XP as an entry, I get an unhandled exception error. If I delete all my entries and then add a Windows 7 entry under my C:/ drive, I get no problem. If I try to add it under D:/, I get the error. If I delete all entries and try to add the Windows XP entry first, I get a send/don't send error.

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

Windows 7 - partitions without letter not handled correctly

STEPS TO REPRODUCE ERROR:
----------------------------------------
I'm having configuration with 4 primary partitions on SATA RAID volume:
3 partitions with windows 7 OS (all cloned) + 1 data partition (my documents etc).
So, partitions are:

0 - win7 "A"
1 - win7 "B"
2 - win7 "C"
3 - data

Initially all partitions have letter, and I used EasyBCD to build a boot menu - everything works fine.
Booting into each of 3 win7 os, go to windows disk management, and remove drive letter from other two OS partitions, so they are "invisible" to the file system. Repeat process for all 3 OS's, hiding other two partitions on each system, so you see e.g. partition win7A and data, or win7B and data partition. That way OS's are somewhat isolated from each other.
Still everything works fine.

I needed to make small chenge in easybcd, renaming a boot menu item - suddenly, BOOT MENU IS MESSED-UP: each boot item points to single, first OS that is currently visible like "C" drive. I cannot boot any more to other os's.

SOLUTION:
Do not rely on drive letters! They are not "fixed" thing to name a partition. They are very changeable, dynamic, like free space on disk. Not something to rely on.
I suggest you to use 1-based index of the partition inside a HDD, and user should also see partition name (if it is formatted and have it) and size, used space - that would help to identify a partition.
Without that, boot configuration is all messed-up because some partitions have no letters (they are hidden). Other reason is: windows 7 allways marks with "C" partition you boot from. So, on each boot, different partition becomes "C".
It would be nice to see that Easybcd does not corrupt boot menu when some partitions mentioned in it are hidden (drive letter removed by me or changed to "C" by win7 os)

Regards,

B.

Hi Mahmoud,

I am still getting a freeze when trying Detailed View with 66. Need to End Process in Task Manager to get out of it.

If I add another Real mode entry - Easybcd won't start up at all - each attempt to start results in another instance of bcdedit.exe and Easybcd in Task Manager - but no GUI.

Is there something strange about my my bcd?

Problem with the VHD feature [not solved]

Well, I just used Build 65 of EasyBCD to remove the two "Microsoft Windows" entries showing in EasyBCD (but not in the boot menu), which were created when I attempted to created a VHD entry for my virtual disk install of Win 7, and then I tried it again, once again pointing the entry at the "Win7.vhd" file on my hard drive, which contains Win 7, and naming the entry "Windows 7". But, this time, it showed just one entry (instead of two, like before) named "Microsoft Windows" in EasyBCD. So I rebooted, and that entry was not in the boot menu either. So, apparently, the problem is not solved...

*Addendum:*

Ok, in this post (http://neosmart.net/forums/showthread.php?p=43346#post43346),
someone with the same problem suggested running the following commands:

Code:
---------
bcdedit /copy {current} /d "<Installation Name>"
(make note of new guid output now)

bcdedit /set {newguid} device vhd=[Drive:]\<vhd location>
bcdedit /set {newguid} osdevice vhd=[Drive:]\<vhd location>
bcdedit /set {newguid} detecthal on
---------
but unfortunately, i deleted (thinking i didn't need it anymore), the original Win 7 entry which the installer created, and so i can't copy it.
I guess I can try creating a normal Vista-type entry, naming it "Win 7", and then running the above commands on it...that may work. We'll see.

EDIT: Oh, and there was never any space in the file path to the virtual disk file, in my case. The path was simply C:\Win7.vhd. And the name of the entry I attempted to create (and which ended up creating two "Microsoft Windows" entries in EasyBCD, in a pre-65 build) was simply "Windows 7".

Ok, in this post,
someone with the same problem suggested running the following commands:

Code:

bcdedit /copy {current} /d "<Installation Name>"
(make note of new guid output now)

bcdedit /set {newguid} device vhd=[Drive:]\<vhd location>
bcdedit /set {newguid} osdevice vhd=[Drive:]\<vhd location>
bcdedit /set {newguid} detecthal on

but unfortunately, i deleted (thinking i didn't need it anymore), the original Win 7 entry which the installer created, and so i can't copy it.
I guess I can try creating a normal Vista-type entry, naming it "Win 7", and then running the above commands on it...that may work. We'll see.
