Graphics card help

I have a problem with this silly Verizon Games-on-Demand service. One of the games I'm trying to play says it requires 64 MB of memory on my graphics card, recommended 128, but Verizon's little scan seems to think I only have 64 available, it says it's running but never pops up. Something wrong with my card? I'm updating drivers right now... I can post a dxdiag report if ya need it. I'd really appreciate any help.

Yes, those games. One of them freezes up when I try to play, Verizon analysis says it's my drivers, maybe the game is old? That one has a pop-up that says my drivers need to be 100% DirectX 6 compatable. A few others will minimize into the tray and say "(Game) is running." That one is the one where Verizon says I only have 64MB of graphics card memory. EDIT: Actually one of the ones that minimizes but won't open says its my graphics driver version: Recommended: 163.69 Detected: 78.24

Running the onboard graphics? As far as the DX6 that sounds like old 9x-ME games that required the old version of direct x be installed in order to run the game. Many older games would see the option for installing one particular version due to requirements in the game itself.

If these games were written strictly for older versions of Windows that would be the main part of the problem since they wouldn't be Vista compatible. You can try right clicking on any desktop shortcuts for each in order to use the run in ? compatibility mode to see if that will help with some.

Ran it for 95 and 98-ME and it didn't work. No idea what to do.

Start>Run>dxdiag

Run that and post up the results in a couple screenshots if you could. You might just need to update your DirectX to the latest version. Or it could just be that your GFX card might not be able to handle the games. 64MB being the minimal specs doesnt guarantee that you can run the game if you meet it.

This Verizon live support guy said I needed to update DirectX. I asked him "so DirectX 10 is worse than 9.x?" He says that it won't work for games made for DirectX 9... sends me to their website... DirectX says I have newer or equivelant version and exits out. Anyway, here's pertinent dxdiag report:

It istn that. Games that run on DX9 you still need to install DX9 in Vista. DX10 isnt backward compatible like that. DX10 is better. But you still need to have DX9 on there. And no it wont overwrite your DX10 stuff either. It will jsut be used when you games with DX9 stuff.

So try installing that first.

You can download the web installer to see even DX9c updated at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

DX9 will still go right on Vista just it did on XP. But just like I thought you never put that on separately and are running into problems without any older DX version on which is required by most older game titles. Apparently version assumes everyone already has it on since they didn't make any mention of that for Vista users.
