64 bit Vista will have 2 Program Files folders
Program Files (for 64 bit) and Program Files (x86) for the 32 bit programs.
32 bit Vista just has "Program Files", not having different versions to distinguish between.

To burn the Vista recovery thing, you have to download the appropriate file - either 32 or 64 bit. All the information about finding out if it's 32 or 64 says to go on the start menu, and check the properties of my computer, but I cannot get that far as the computer freezes at the password stage or just as the background picture appears. Is there a way to find out what kind I have from "outside" my computer?
