Multiple Partitions with RAID 1

Hi All,

Although I am not new to dual boot systems, I like to use RAID 1 for my OSes.
My question is, if I configure a system to use RAID 1 for dual booting Win XP and Vista, what will happen if I have a hard drive failure?
For instance, if I replace a faulty HDD, will the RAID be aware of the two partitions and rebuild the RAID correctly?
Obviously this would have to be rebuilt twice for both partitions / HDD's.
TIA.

Hashcake.

Hi Hashcake, welcome to NeoSmart Technologies.

Recocery of more than one partition on a RAID1 setup is definitely possible, though the exact method depends on the RAID solution in use.

Most RAID setups don't see partitions - it sees the entire disk as a stream of 0s and 1s - the MBR included. So, yeah, in case of a fried HD you should be good to go with RAID 1 no matter whether you had just the one partition or adozen. Be sure to read the RAID userguide for your motherboard or SATA controller before doing anything though - sometimes there are minor tricks and pitfalls you need to be wary of.
