And unlike the iPhone 8, iOS 11 has been available now for some time for beta testing and software development. There are a lot of changes &#8211; some good, some bad<sup id=\"rf1-4176\"><a href=\"#fn1-4176\" title=\"For example, because Apple couldn&rsquo;t figure out how to get force touch working nicely on the new iPhone, they&rsquo;ve chosen to deprecate force touch features across the OS, completely disabling the &ldquo;force touch swipe from the edge of the screen to switch apps&rdquo; after having completely rearchitectured the task switcher UX to specifically be built around this feature, rather than officially having a feature available on older gen iPhones but not on the latest and greatest.\" rel=\"footnote\">1<\/a><\/sup> &#8211; but there are two new features that are especially important to be aware of given that they could &#8211; literally &#8211; save your life.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>First up is the new &#8220;Do Not Disturb While Driving&#8221; mode:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/neosmart.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Do-Not-Disturb-While-Driving.png\" rel=\"follow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4179 alignnone colorbox-4176\" src=\"https:\/\/neosmart.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Do-Not-Disturb-While-Driving-576x1024.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"623\" srcset=\"https:\/\/neosmart.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Do-Not-Disturb-While-Driving-576x1024.png 576w, https:\/\/neosmart.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Do-Not-Disturb-While-Driving-337x600.png 337w, https:\/\/neosmart.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Do-Not-Disturb-While-Driving-169x300.png 169w, https:\/\/neosmart.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Do-Not-Disturb-While-Driving.png 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When enabled, this new feature will automatically put your iPhone in &#8220;Do Not Disturb&#8221; mode when it detects that you&#8217;re in a moving vehicle. This&#8217;ll disable notifications for the duration of your trip and trigger a safety reminder\/warning to pop up if you try to use your iPhone while the car is moving:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4180\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/neosmart.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Im-not-driving.png\" rel=\"follow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4180\" class=\"wp-image-4180 colorbox-4176\" src=\"https:\/\/neosmart.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Im-not-driving-576x1024.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"623\" srcset=\"https:\/\/neosmart.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Im-not-driving-576x1024.png 576w, https:\/\/neosmart.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Im-not-driving-337x600.png 337w, https:\/\/neosmart.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Im-not-driving-169x300.png 169w, https:\/\/neosmart.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Im-not-driving.png 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4180\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">You&#8217;ll need to press &#8220;I&#8217;m Not Driving&#8221; to access your iPhone if this option is enabled and iOS 11 detects that you&#8217;re in a moving vehicle.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In addition to the safety prompt shown above which makes you click &#8220;I&#8217;m not driving&#8221; to access your iPhone if it thinks that you&#8217;re in a moving vehicle, the new Do Not Disturb mode can optionally send an autoresponder to select contacts that try to reach you while you&#8217;re driving. The configurable option lets you optionally have iOS 11 send the following reply automatically, notifying people trying to text you that you&#8217;re currently driving and won&#8217;t receive notifications until you&#8217;ve &#8211; God willing &#8211; safely reached your destination.. and even provides an option to force the notifications to come through in case of an emergency:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/neosmart.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Redacted-DND-Auto-Responder.png\" rel=\"follow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4182 size-large colorbox-4176\" src=\"https:\/\/neosmart.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Redacted-DND-Auto-Responder-1024x795.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"481\" srcset=\"https:\/\/neosmart.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Redacted-DND-Auto-Responder-1024x795.png 1024w, https:\/\/neosmart.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Redacted-DND-Auto-Responder-600x466.png 600w, https:\/\/neosmart.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Redacted-DND-Auto-Responder-386x300.png 386w, https:\/\/neosmart.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Redacted-DND-Auto-Responder.png 1802w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I&#8217;m driving with Do Not Disturb While Driving turned on. I&#8217;ll see your message when I get where I&#8217;m going.<\/p>\n<p>(I&#8217;m not receiving notifications. If this is urgent, reply &#8220;urgent&#8221; to send a notification through with your original message.)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If the contact replies to the autoresponder with &#8220;urgent,&#8221; your iPhone will alert you anyway, letting you receive the text message in case of an emergency.<\/p>\n<p>For obvious privacy reasons,<sup id=\"rf2-4176\"><a href=\"#fn2-4176\" title=\"It would be awkward if you were pretending to be home sick on bed rest and your iPhone obligingly informed your boss that you were actually on a road trip to Las Vegas or Lake Tahoe, wouldn&rsquo;t it?\" rel=\"footnote\">2<\/a><\/sup> this feature isn&#8217;t enabled out-of-the-box, though iOS 11 will prompt you to allow it for contacts on your &#8220;Favorites&#8221; list.<\/p>\n<p>The second, potentially life-saving feature iOS 11 brings to the table is an emergency\/SOS signal that can be enabled by hitting the power button rapidly 5 times (for the readers in the audience who have a habit of fidgeting, this would be a good time to direct your fingers&#8217; worthy efforts to the ring silencer instead of the power button).
