a noob question. if i wanted to upgrade my OS from Home premium to Ultimate, nothing will be erased? thanks

ive been searching through the net on how to fix this mess...ive seen a couple of repairs but it doesnt work for me. i tried installing the recovery disk which i got from this site...and im one of those guys that knows a lil bit of computer...i got a gateway laptop...hope some1 can help me step...
