I would suggest you check this forum for Vista hide and seek (also for W7, just old name), this will hide 7 partition when in XP and also prevents your W7 system restore points being removed by XP. Mike

I would also suggest, first. When booting, make sure that every peripherial is disconnected, such as web-cams, networks, sd cards etc. Windows boots loads of drivers at different times in the boot cycle, anything can cause it to hang at any stage before going into a full desktop. M

Have you tried the Vista repair disk available on this site, which is the one you should have made when you installed the system.

Unless the registry hack works for you. You still need HidenSeek to hide the system restores from each other. CG it would be nice for a W7 boot graphic as an option from the vista one :)
