Did all that, tried again with Ubuntu but still can't mount on that part of the HD. The Recovery Partition is all I can access, but I don't know how to proceed from there. Any ideas?

I have the same problem. I went through the Manual recovery steps http://neosmart.net/wiki/display/EBCD/Recovering+the+Vista+Bootloader+from+the+DVD and ended up without BCD. What should I do now?
