Hi Zeeshan, welcome to NST.
Change the drive option for XP from U to "boot", and if XP won't boot then, the symptoms and the solutions should be described in the wiki here.

Go into folder options, and change the "show hidden files" "hide protected operating system files" and "hide extensions for known file types" so that you can see and find everything.
Then copy the 3 files from the XP root into the Vista root (if Vista is your "system active" partition)

The root of drive C is, for example C:\boot.ini (i.e. not inside a folder)
You'll need to edit boot.ini to point at your XP partition.
check here for all the information you'll need.
The "system active" partition is where all the boot files for both systems must be, and even when you boot XP, it will still be Vista marked system active (because the boot files haven't moved), but XP will be marked "boot" (to show that's what you're actually running)

Please describe in more detail, how the XP boot is failing. What message(s) are you getting, or what symptoms ?
Post a screenshot of your admin tools/computer management/disk management screen so we can see what your HDD layout is, to advise you on boot.ini.

ok i will post a SS for disk manager
wht else information u need
my dual boot is not woking at all n no errors.

like u said b4 that i need to edit boot.ini file so shld i make any changes in easyBCD?
shld i remove the settings or just leave it/?

OK check that you have C:\boot.ini C:\NTLDR and c:\ntdetect.com, and point boot.ini to partition(2), then run EasyBCD,
go into add/remove entries
select the line for the XP system in the top box (manage existing entries) and click "delete" and "save"
go down to the add an entry box and click on the Windows tab
select windows NT/XP in the dropdown box
(it should default to C or "boot" and be greyed out in the "drive" box)
change the name to XP or whatever you want it to be called on your boot menu
Click add entry, and "save"

According to CG in other threads, U: isn't correct. EasyBCD detects the correct drive automatically and you shouldn't select XP's partition when adding the entry.

Alternitvely, you can go into an elevated command prompt and use bcdedit <BCDID> /set drive C:/D: (Most likely it'll be C: ) on the existing entry to point the entry to the correct partition.

wht do u mean by "and point boot.ini to partition(2),"
do u mean sth like this

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

i did this test nothing happened "go down to the add an entry box and click on the Windows tab
select windows NT/XP in the dropdown box
(it should default to C or "boot" and be greyed out in the "drive" box)
change the name to XP or whatever you want it to be called on your boot menu
Click add entry, and "save""

did it still same i cant dual boot. :frowning: :frowning: :frowning:

It's difficult to help when you just say "I can't dual boot".
Can you please describe exactly what does happen when you try to boot.
Also please paste the output from EasyBCD "view settings" in ""detailed (debug) " mode and screenshots of the contents of your C: and D: disks from windows explorer

its booting as a normal laptop like there is no other OS in.

You still have the drive for XP showing "U" in the EasyBCD display - this means it's unknown. Change it to "c" or "boot" and make sure you hit "save" to save the change you just made.
What have you done with the XP root files ?
You should have copied the 3 XP boot files to C:, not moved them. There should also be files like autoexec.bat and config.sys in the root of D:\ but they're all in the C:\ root
Did your XP installation complete successfully ? It doesn't appear to be all there, or did you move everything from D:\ to C:\ ?

no i never moved or copied any files from D & C drives means where my XP & vista is installed.
C is vista D is XP.
i also dont know y the hell its showing U: drive .
there was two 3 partitions as u saw 1 is without the drive letter 2nd is C drive which has vista and D was 150 gb i delete that partition and made it 10gb to install XP. rest is unallocated for now.
this laptop came with pre installed vista so i made a partition for XP n then i installed XP on D drive n then i cant use vista ,
then i repair my vista as i gave u a link on my first post i followed those step to dual boot but still i cant do it.

If you didn't move all the XP files onto your Vista disk, then something must have gone wrong with your XP installation.
Vista doesn't have autoexec and config files, so there shouldn't be any on the C:\ disk, but you've got the full set of XP files on your Vista disk and none at all on your XP disk.
What happens when you change the "U" drive to "C" in EasyBCD ?

well i have no idea y is it like that.
this is the second time i formated XP n installed again.
b4 formating it was also U:
and in add n remover entries there is no drive such as U:
there r C, D, & boot.
it selects automatically.
is there any option to change U to C drive .

Addendum:

can u plz tell me the way i installed XP is it correct ?
or can u just explain me in breifly how this dual booting this is done. (with pre installed vista)
plz dont give me any links cuz every1 having different issuses so i really get lost n confused lolx :grinning:.

Dont use add/remove entries, use "change settings" to alter an existing entry. Change U there to C or boot. (U doesn't mean drive U:\ in EasyBCD - it's a special case meaning "unknown" )

finally i can c windiws XP & vista opition went i restart my laptop. "as u said to change the drive from change settings "

k now when i select vista is working fine :grinning:
but when i select XP this screens come up

the setup says that windows failed to start
1. insert windows installation cd & restart ur comp
2. choose ur language and select next
3. click repair ur comp etc etc
as u can c in the SS.

so wht i did i inserted a win XP cd reboot my comp then i booted win xp
so there was an option press r to repair ur windows
so when i press r start detedting my hard disk n goes to dos
ask me which windows would u like to repair
1. C:/ windows
2. D:/ windows
i selected 2 means D:
after that setup ask me to input the password
my win XP does has any password
later i just press enter
n then
"D:/windows>" just stay like that
if i press enter also same
its like dos
i can c dir etc etc
now wht i m suppose to do ? :frowning:
