Default Can't fix boot sector problem with BCD, getting device I/O errors

Am afraid my hard drive is bad, but it is a new laptop.

Laptop isn't booting because it can't read the bootsector.
The Automated Repair from recovery disk fails. Doing the manual repairs fail, always with Device I/O errors. These come back from: attrib, del c:\boot\BCD, bcdedit /createstore, etc.

Is there a way to fix this, or is the disk just shot?

You could try a chkdsk /r on the affected drive.
