Black screen on laptop~ how to CD boot?

#1
My girlfriend's HP laptop won't boot~ fan is on, lights on keyboard on but has a blank black screen.
Have done the standard hard reset, tried to see if there was anything displayed using a separate monitor..... nothing.
Is there any way of using a recovery disc to boot from disc drive when the screen is black? In other words ordinarily you would mash 'Delete' button or whatever key your computer brand uses, then you get option to actually change boot order on screen, but with the black screen problem on a laptop you can't see anything!
Any helpful replies appreciated
Thank

Does the PC beep at all when you power up ?
If so, look in the HP site for beep codes (how many and what pattern) which will inform you what kind of h/w failure is preventing progress.

Boot in Safe Mode to troubleshoot and fix a black screen problem
Start your PC.
At the sign-in screen, hold the Shift key down, click the Power button on the bottom-right, and select Restart. ...
Once you're the advanced startup menu, click Troubleshoot.
Click Advanced options.
Click Startup Settings.
