Can't load EasyRE on to thumb drive

Dell running Windows 7 Pro started endless startup repair loop ending on blue screen. No longer have the Windows 7 CD or the product key to download from Microsoft. Bought and downloaded EasyRE to old laptop running XP - when I try to move it to thumb drive using Easy USB creator - I get error 'unable to mark drive as active partition! Please manually make drive active before trying again' - went to disk management, the 'make partition active' was not clickable. Downloaded BCD - won't work on XP. Downloaded another company's tool to do it, it said the ISO file (EasyRE) was not a valid ISO file. Before I end up paying the geek squad, can anyone help please?
