Mac OS: Backup in Time Machine: How to read files before reinstalling on reset Mac.

Following an automatic upgrade, my Mac slowed and I could not reliably reach those help menus (needed because this is my first Mac). Apple techies did five resets in attempts to resolve problem, they did verify that the hardware and firmware are okay. I had done backups but learned the hard way about proper ejection of external drives, so I'm not sure if the files are corrupted as a result of incorrectly ejecting the external HD I used for the Time Machine backups as I cannot get into them to review. My knowledge of computers is next to nil , compared to what I read here, and this MacBook has so many weird symbols on it. Previous usage was limited to web surf and mail on a windows based laptop that is a dual OS (Linux and Windows 10) setup. That's a different problem.
