bootrec.exe<\/strong> is the utility that is used to update the master boot record code, partition bootsector code, and the BCD (boot configuration data). It’s most-commonly used to correct\u00a0boot problems on Windows Vista and later versions of Windows.<\/p>\n

Description<\/span><\/h2>\n
The bootrec.exe<\/strong> utility takes\u00a0only one of several valid argument,\u00a0depending on the desired correction behavior. It can be used to update\u00a0a\u00a0disk’s master boot record (MBR<\/strong>) code, a partition’s bootsector\u00a0code, or to\u00a0rebuild the boot configuration data (BCD<\/strong>).<\/p>\n
The options are as follows:<\/p>\n
\/?<\/strong>
\nLists the existing arguments<\/p>\n
\/fixmbr<\/strong>
\nUpdates the master boot record (MBR<\/strong>) code with the code compatible with Windows Vista, 7, 8, 10. It doesn’t edit the existing partition table.<\/p>\n
\/fixboot<\/strong>
\nUpdates the boot sector code\u00a0of the partition used to boot the system\u00a0with the code that loads and runs the\u00a0BOOTMGR<\/strong> bootloader i.e. it works on Windows Vista, 7, 8, 10.<\/p>\n
\/scanos<\/strong>
\nScans all disks for Windows installations that are Windows Vista or of a newer version and returns the number of installations that are not listed in the boot configuration data (BCD<\/strong>\u00a0i.e. can’t be booted into.<\/p>\n
\/rebuildbcd<\/strong>
\nRebuilds the boot configuration data (BCD<\/strong>) by updating it with a choice to boot into versions of Windows installed on the disk that were previously unbootable i.e. adding them to the boot configuration data.<\/p>\n
Exit Status<\/span><\/h2>\n
The bootrec utility exits 0<\/strong> on success and 1<\/strong> if an error occurs.<\/p>\n
Examples<\/span><\/h2>\n
To update the master boot record (MBR<\/strong>) code of the disk in the case it got corrupt or rewritten, resulting in the inability to boot the system:<\/p>\n
bootrec \/fixmbr<\/code><\/strong><\/p>\n
To update the boot sector code of the partition used to boot the system with the code that loads and runs the BOOTMGR bootloader:<\/p>\n
bootrec \/fixboot<\/code><\/strong><\/p>\n
To scan all the Windows installations on the disk that are not included in the BCD:<\/p>\n
bootrec \/scanos<\/code><\/strong><\/p>\n
To update the BCD with the ability to boot into Windows versions installed on the hard disk that were previously unbootable:<\/p>\n

Before the bootsect<\/a>\u00a0utility introduced the \/mbr<\/strong><\/code> argument, bootrec \/fixmbr<\/strong><\/code> was the only way of updating the disk’s MBR<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
