Create boot disk for Windows XP<\/h2>\n
The original Windows XP installation CD itself acts as a boot or startup disk that you can use and run Recovery Console (Command Prompt) to repair your computer with.<\/p>\n
If you already have the installation CD, follow these steps to boot into Recovery Console and the Command Prompt of Windows XP:<\/p>\n

Insert the CD in the disk drive and restart your computer<\/li>\n
Press any key, when prompted to boot from the CD<\/li>\n
Press R<\/kbd> to open Recovery Console<\/strong>, at the “Welcome to Setup” screen\n<\/p>\nWindows XP Press R for Recovery Console<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n
Type your administrator password<\/li>\n
Command Prompt should now be available<\/li>\n
The following commands might help fix your computer:\n
bootcfg \/rebuild<\/pre>\n
chkdsk \/r \/f<\/pre>\n
fixboot<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n
Press Enter<\/kbd> after each command<\/li>\n<\/ol>\nIf you don’t have the CD, you can create a bootable diskette if your computer has a floppy disk drive to boot into MS-DOS. You need to be able to boot into Windows XP to create this diskette.<\/p>\n To create the boot diskette for Windows XP, follow these steps:<\/p>\n

Insert a diskette in your computer’s floppy disk drive<\/li>\n
Go to My Computer<\/strong><\/li>\n
Right click on A:\\<\/code>, this is usually the drive letter that holds the diskette<\/li>\n
Click Format<\/strong><\/li>\n
Check the “Create an MS-DOS startup disk<\/strong>” option\n<\/p>\nCreate MS-DOS startup disk option<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n
Click Start<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\nOnce you have the diskette created, follow these instructions to use it when you need it:<\/p>\n \nMake sure the disk is in write-protect mode<\/li>\n Insert the disk in the floppy disk<\/li>\n Restart your computer<\/li>\n Follow the instructions on the screen as you boot the system from the diskette<\/li>\n<\/ol>\nYou can also create a set of setup\/boot disks that will allow you to bypass the need for a bootable CD-ROM<\/em> (and then continue a reinstallation of Windows XP) by following these instructions:<\/p>\n \nDownload the setup program file for the Windows XP you have installed:\n\nWindows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2<\/a><\/li>\n Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n Extract the files<\/li>\n Type the drive where your floppy disks is – example: A:<\/code> – and hit Enter<\/kbd> when you receive this message:\nThis program creates the Setup boot disks for Windows XP. To create these disks, you must to provide 6 blank, formatted, high-density disks.\r\n\r\nPlease specify the floppy drive to copy the images to:<\/pre>\n<\/li>\nInsert the first blank disk in the floppy drive when you receive this message:\nInsert one of these disks into drive drive letter. This disk will become the Windows XP Setup Boot Disk.\r\n\r\nPress any key when you are ready.<\/pre>\n<\/li>\nContinue with the process until all 6 disks are created<\/li>\nBoot from the first created diskette. Make sure you have the installation CD at hand to be used during a reinstallation process.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\nCreate boot disk for Windows Vista<\/h2>\nIf you already have the Windows Vista installation disk, you can use it to recover or restore your computer.<\/p>\nIf not, go to the Create the disk<\/a> section instructions to learn how you can create the disk (read Prerequisites<\/a> before).<\/p>\n If you don’t have the installation disk and can’t boot into Windows, go to Download boot disk<\/a> and use Easy Recovery Essentials’ Automated Repair function to fix boot errors automatically.<\/p>\n To repair your computer, if you have the Windows Vista installation disk, follow these steps:<\/p>\n \nInsert the disk<\/li>\n Restart your computer<\/li>\n Press any key to start Windows from the disk. If the “Press any key” message doesn’t appear, please check your BIOS settings as you need to boot from the DVD first.\n<\/p>\nPress any key<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n Choose your language preferences<\/li>\n Click Next<\/li>\nClick Repair your computer<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\nIf you don’t have the installation disk, but your computer has the recovery options preinstalled, you can follow these steps:<\/p>\n\nRestart your computer. Remove all CDs, DVDs or USB flash drives from your computer first.<\/li>\n Press and hold the F8<\/kbd> key as your computer boots up. You need to press this key before the Windows Vista logo appears on your screen.<\/li>\nAt the Advanced Boot Options<\/strong> screen, select Repair your computer<\/strong>.\nIf the “Repair your computer” option isn’t available, your computer doesn’t have any recovery options preinstalled. If so, go to Download boot disk<\/a>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\nThe Advanced Boot Options screen in Windows Vista<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n Hit Enter<\/kbd><\/li>\n Select a keyboard layout<\/li>\n Click Next<\/li>\n Login with an administrator account (or any account that has administrative rights to the system)<\/li>\n Click OK<\/li>\n<\/ol>\nIf you want to create a boot disk, follow the instructions from Prerequisites<\/a> and then the Create the disk<\/a> instructions.<\/p>\n Prerequisites<\/h3>\nYou must verify what version of Windows Vista you have before you create the boot or startup disk. If you have any Service Packs installed, you need the recdisc.exe<\/code> file from the System32<\/code> folder to be from a Windows Vista system without any Service Packs (SP) installed.<\/p>\n To verify this, follow these steps:<\/p>\n\nGo to Control Panel<\/li>\n Click on System<\/li>\n Go to the System type<\/strong> section<\/li>\n Check if you run a “32-bit” Windows Vista or a “64-bit” Windows Vista\n<\/p>\nWindows Vista System Type<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\nAbove, at the Windows edition<\/strong> section, check if you have Service Pack 1 or Service Pack 2 installed, or none.\n<\/p>\nThe Windows Vista – Windows Edition section<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n If you have the Windows Vista with Service Pack 1 (SP1) or Service Pack 2 (SP2) installed, you need to replace the recdisc.exe<\/code> file.<\/p>\n Your Windows Vista has SP1 or SP2 installed only if it’s mentioned in the Windows edition section, above the “System type” section.<\/p>\nIf you have a Service Pack installed, follow these steps to replace the recdisc.exe file before you continue with the Create the disk<\/a> section steps:<\/p>\n \nCopy an original recdisc.exe file from a Windows Vista without SP. This file will be replaced with your current recdisc.exe.<\/li>\n Copy this file to your Desktop<\/li>\n Right-click on the file > Properties<\/li>\n Go to the General tab<\/li>\n Click Unblock. If this option – Unblock – doesn’t exist in the General tab, skip this step.<\/li>\n Click OK<\/li>\n Go to C:\\Windows\\System32\\<\/code> (from My Computer > C:\\ > Windows > System32)<\/li>\n Find the recdisc.exe file from this folder<\/li>\n Make sure you have permissions to make modifications to this file. Right-click on this file > Properties<\/li>\n To have a backup of your original recdisc.exe file, rename it to recdisc.exe.backup<\/code> or similar<\/li>\n Go to the copied recdisc.exe file and copy it (Right-click > Copy)<\/li>\n Paste it in the System32<\/code> folder, to overwrite your current recdisc.exe file<\/li>\nIf you didn’t renamed the original file, confirm that you want to replace it (click Copy and Replace, when prompted)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\nOnce these steps have been completed, move to Create the disk<\/a> below to create the boot\/startup disk for Windows Vista.<\/p>\n Creating a boot disk<\/h3>\nPlease read Prerequisites<\/a> above before continuing with these instructions.<\/p>\n These steps allow you to create the boot or startup disk (a recovery media) for Windows Vista that you can use in emergency cases.<\/p>\n \nAt Start, type recdisc.exe<\/code> in the search field<\/li>\n When the search results appears, click on the top result item<\/li>\n Insert a blank DVD in the disk tray. You can use CDs or DVDs for this<\/li>\n Select the disk drive from the “Drive:” list<\/li>\n Click Create disc.<\/strong> If after clicking Create disc, the system shows a message about the installation disk – Insert Windows installation disc<\/em> – you need the original installation disk as your version of Windows Vista is missing the necessary files to continue with the process.<\/li>\n Wait for the recdisc.exe utility software to finish the procedure<\/li>\n Click Close<\/strong>, at the “Using the system repair disc” screen\n<\/p>\nWindows Vista – Using the system repair disc<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\nClick OK<\/li>\n<\/ol>\nCreate boot disk for Windows 7<\/h2>\nIf you already have the original installation DVD of Windows 7, you can use that DVD as the boot disk to repair your computer.<\/p>\n If you want to repair your computer and have the installation disk at hand, follow these steps to boot into the System Recovery Options<\/strong> of your computer:<\/p>\n\nInsert the installation disk (DVD or USB flash drive)<\/li>\n Restart your computer<\/li>\n Press any key to boot from the disk, when prompted<\/li>\n Choose your language preferences<\/li>\n Click Next<\/li>\nClick Repair your computer<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\nIf you don’t have the installation disk, but your system has the system recovery options pre-installed, follow these steps:<\/p>\n\nRemove all CDs, DVDs and USB flash drives from your computer<\/li>\n Restart the computer<\/li>\n Press and hold the F8<\/kbd> key as your computer boots. You must press and hold the F8<\/kbd> key before the Windows 7 logo appears.<\/li>\nSelect Repair your computer<\/strong>, at the Advanced Boot Options<\/strong> screen\nIf the “Repair your computer” option isn’t listed, it means that your Windows 7 version doesn’t have the necessary files for this procedure. If so, go to Download boot disk<\/a>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\nAdvanced Boot Options on Windows 7<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n Select the keyboard layout<\/li>\n Click Next<\/li>\n<\/ol>\nYou can create the boot disk for Windows 7 by following these steps:<\/p>\n\nBoot into Windows 7 and login as an administrator or any user who has administrative rights to the system<\/li>\n Insert a blank DVD in the disk tray<\/li>\n At Start, type recdisc.exe<\/code> in the Search field<\/li>\n Click on the first result, the recdisc.exe item. It should usually be the first result item available.<\/li>\nIf the “Create a system repair disc” screen doesn’t show up, follow these steps instead:\n\nGo to Control Panel<\/li>\n Go to Backup and Restore<\/li>\n Click on Create a system repair disc<\/strong>\n<\/p>\nWindows 7 – Create a system repair disc item<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n Select the drive that has the blank DVD in it<\/li>\n Click Create disc<\/strong><\/li>\n When the process is finished, click Close\n<\/p>\nWindows 7 – Create disc progress bar<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\nClick OK<\/li>\n<\/ol>\nCreate boot disk for Windows 8\/8.1\/10<\/h2>\nIn Windows 8 or 8.1, you can refresh, reset or restore your computer. These three actions have different outcomes:<\/p>\n\nRefresh<\/strong> will not affect your files. Windows 8\/8.1 will reinstall any applications you installed and create a copy of these applications on your desktop. Even so, backup your data before you do a refresh.<\/li>\n Reset<\/strong> will remove all your personal files and delete any settings or configuration you did on your computer.<\/li>\nRestore<\/strong> will restore your computer to an earlier point in time, if System Restore is available and enabled.By default, Windows 8\/8.1 creates restore points whenever you install new applications or do Windows updates. If you haven’t disabled System Restore, restoring your computer via this utility should work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nIf you want to create the boot disk, find the instructions below:<\/p>\n\nIf you have Windows 8, not 8.1, follow Create the disk as a CD\/DVD<\/a><\/li>\n If you have Windows 8.1, not 8.0, follow Create the disk as a USB drive<\/a>.
