This guide explains how to use the Bootrec (bootrec.exe) utility<\/strong> for the following Windows versions: Windows XP (bootcfg, not bootrec), Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 <\/strong>or 10.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Bootrec in Windows<\/h2>\n
Bootrec or the bootrec.exe utility is a tool provided by Microsoft in Windows Recovery Environment, or the Windows RE.<\/p>\n
When your computer fails to start, Windows automatically starts in this Windows RE – a recovery platform based on Windows Preinstallation Environment – where you can find various tools that can potentially fix your computer: Startup Repair, Command Prompt etc.<\/p>\n
This is useful to troubleshoot and potentially fix errors that are preventing your computer to start.<\/p>\n

Bootrec.exe is used in connection with:<\/p>\n

This utility is available for Microsoft Windows Vista, Microsoft Windows 7, Microsoft Windows 8 and Microsoft Windows 8.1.<\/p>\n
Bootrec in Windows XP<\/h3>\n
Microsoft Windows XP doesn’t have a bootrec.exe utility<\/strong>, but a bootcfg.exe utility which is part of the Windows XP Recovery Console.<\/p>\n
Windows XP has, instead, the bootcfg utility that can be used to modify the boot.ini file.<\/p>\n

Bootrec in Windows Vista<\/h3>\n
You can run the bootrec commands in Windows Vista if you can boot into Windows Vista and access the System Recovery Options (your system may not have this installed) or you have the installation disc available to access Command Prompt.<\/p>\n
If you can’t boot into your Windows Vista system or don’t have the original installation disc, use Easy Recovery Essentials and run Command Prompt. Download Easy Recovery Essentials<\/a> and burn it to any CDs, DVDs or USBs.<\/p>\n
If you have the installation disc<\/h4>\n
Instructions on how to access bootrec.exe by using the original installation disc in Windows Vista:<\/p>\n

Insert the CD\/DVD of Windows Vista in the optical drive<\/li>\n
Reboot the computer<\/li>\n
Press any key to boot from the CD\/DVD<\/li>\n
Select a language, time and keyboard and click Next<\/strong><\/li>\n
Click Repair your computer<\/strong><\/li>\n
Select the operating system<\/li>\n
Click Next<\/strong><\/li>\n
At the System Recovery Options box, click Command Prompt<\/strong><\/li>\n

If you don’t have the Windows Vista installation disc, you can access System Recovery Options or use Easy Recovery Essentials to launch Command Prompt.<\/p>\n
System Recovery Options is installed on your system if the Repair Your Computer<\/strong> option appears at the Advanced Boot Options menu.<\/p>\n

You can access bootrec.exe on Windows 7 systems similar to Windows Vista systems: via the System Recovery Options (which is, by default, available in Windows 7) or via the installation disc.<\/p>\n
If you can’t boot into your Windows 7 system or don’t have the original installation disc, use Easy Recovery Essentials and run Command Prompt. Download Easy Recovery Essentials<\/a> and burn it to any CDs, DVDs or USBs.<\/p>\n

For commands and parameters for bootcfg, go to Parameters at Windows XP section<\/a>.<\/p>\n Parameters for bootrec.exe are:<\/strong><\/p>\n bootrec \/FixMbr<\/code> will write a Windows Vista and Windows 7 compatible MBR to the system partition.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n bootrec \/FixBoot<\/code> will write a new boot sector to the system partition. If your system is Windows 7, FixBoot will write a Windows 7-compatible boot sector and so on.<\/p>\n bootrec \/ScanOs<\/code> will scan the hard drives for any installations. TO do so, you need to run these steps:<\/p>\n\nType this command:\nbcdedit \/export C:\\BCDBackup<\/pre>\n<\/li>\nType c:<\/code>, where c: is where your Windows is installed<\/li>\n Type cd boot<\/code><\/li>\nType this command:\nattrib bcd -s -h -r<\/pre>\n<\/li>\nType this command:\nren c:\\boot\\bcd bcd.old<\/pre>\n<\/li>\nType this command:\nbootrec \/RebuildBcd<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\nThe requested system device cannot be found<\/h3>\nIf Bootrec shows the “The requested system device cannot be found<\/em>” error, follow the steps from bootrec \/RebuildBcd doesn’t work<\/a>.<\/p>\n bootrec \/ScanOs doesn’t find Windows<\/h3>\nIt’s possible that the bootrec \/ScanOs<\/code> command can find 0 Windows installations:<\/p>\nTotal identified Windows installations: 0<\/pre>\nIn this case you can try the steps from bootrec \/RebuildBcd doesn’t work<\/a> or try:<\/p>\n \nren c:\\bootmgr bootmgrbackup<\/code>, where c:<\/code> is where your Windows is installed<\/li>\n bootrec \/RebuildBcd<\/code><\/li>\nbootrec \/FixBoot<\/code><\/li>\n<\/ol>\nbootrec prints Element not found<\/h3>\nVarious bootrec commands, like bootrec \/RebuildBcd<\/code> or bootrec \/FixBoot<\/code>, can print this error:<\/p>\nElement not found<\/pre>\nIn this case, try any of the following tips:<\/p>\n\nRun the steps from bootrec \/RebuildBcd doesn’t work<\/a><\/li>\n If you have a SATA cable, move it to another port<\/li>\n Make sure the partition is active. To do that, run these commands:\n\ndiskpart<\/code><\/li>\n list disk<\/code><\/li>\n select disk 0<\/code>, where 0<\/code> is the number of your disk<\/li>\n list partition<\/code><\/li>\n select partition 0<\/code>, where 0<\/code> is the number of your partition number<\/li>\n active<\/code><\/li>\nexit<\/code><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nbootrec in Windows 7 doesn’t work<\/h3>\nIf the bootrec \/FixMbr<\/code> or bootrec \/FixBoot<\/code> commands don’t work in Windows 7, try the following steps to restore the boot sector code for your system:<\/p>\nThis solution works only if you have the original Windows 7 installation disc. Otherwise, use Easy Recovery Essentials<\/a> to access Command Prompt or run Automated Repair for automatic repairs.<\/p>\n \nType these commands and press Enter<\/kbd> after each:\ndiskpart\r\nselect disk 0\r\nlist volume<\/pre>\n<\/li>\nRemember the letter of your media drive that has the installation disc, e.g. CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive<\/li>\nType the following commands, press Enter after each and replace D:<\/code> below with the letter of your media drive:\nexit\r\nD:\r\ncd boot\r\ndir<\/pre>\n<\/li>\nType this command:\nbootsect \/nt60 SYS \/mbr<\/pre>\n<\/li>\nPress Enter<\/kbd><\/li>\n Remove the CD or DVD from the media drive<\/li>\n Type exit<\/code><\/li>\n Press Enter<\/kbd><\/li>\nReboot the computer<\/li>\n<\/ol>\nbootrec in Windows 8\/10 doesn’t work<\/h3>\nIf the bootrec utility doesn’t fix your Windows 8 system, you can also try to fix the EFI bootloader of your system:<\/p>\n \nBoot from the install disc (DVD or USB)<\/li>\n Click Repair your computer<\/strong><\/li>\n Choose Troubleshoot<\/strong>, then Command Prompt<\/strong><\/li>\n Type these commands in the exact order shown below and press Enter<\/kbd> after each command:\ndiskpart\r\nsel disk 0\r\nlist vol<\/pre>\n<\/li>\nSelect the volume number that has the FAT32 under the Fs column:\nsel vol 2<\/pre>\nwhere 2<\/code> is the number of the FAT32 partition printed by Command Prompt above.<\/li>\n Assign a unique letter to this partition.
