The <code>SIZE_IN_MB<\/code> is the size of the partition you want to create, in MB.<\/li>\n<li><code>create partition extended size=SIZE_IN_MB<\/code> &#8211; use this command to create a new extended partition. The <code>SIZE_IN_MB<\/code> is the size of the partition you want to create, in MB.<\/li>\n<li><code>create partition logical size=SIZE_IN_MB<\/code> &#8211; use this command to create a new logical partition. The <code>SIZE_IN_MB<\/code> is the size of the partition you want to create, in MB.<\/li>\n<li><code>delete partition<\/code> will delete the current active partition<\/li>\n<li><code>extend<\/code> will extend the current volume<\/li>\n<li><code>remove<\/code> will remove a letter or a mount point from the current active partition<\/li>\n<li><code>active<\/code> &#8211; use this to set the current volume as active<\/li>\n<li><code>add disk<\/code> &#8211; use this command to add a mirror to the current active volume<\/li>\n<li><code>break disk<\/code> &#8211; use this command to break the mirror added<\/li>\n<li><code>create volume stripe<\/code> &#8211; use this to create a stripe set volume on a specified disk<\/li>\n<li><code>create volume raid<\/code> &#8211; use this command to create a Raid-5 volume on a specified disk<\/li>\n<li><code>delete disk<\/code> &#8211; use this command to delete a missing dynamic disk<\/li>\n<li><code>delete partition<\/code> &#8211; use this command to delete the current active partition<\/li>\n<li><code>extend disk<\/code> &#8211; use this command to extend the current volume<\/li>\n<li><code>import<\/code> can be used to import disks from a foreigh disk group<\/li>\n<li><code>online<\/code> can be used to bring a disk or a volume online that was previously offline<\/li>\n<li><code>remove<\/code> can be used to remove a letter or a mount point from the current active volume<\/li>\n<li><code>retain<\/code> is used to prepare a volume to be used as a boot or system volume<\/li>\n<li><code>convert mbr<\/code> will set the partition style of the current disk to MBR<\/li>\n<li><code>convert gpt<\/code> will set the partition style to GPT<\/li>\n<li><code>convert dynamic<\/code> will change a basic disk into a dynamic one<\/li>\n<li><code>convert basic<\/code> will convert a dynamic disk (empty disk) into a basic disk<\/li>\n<li><code>exit<\/code> will exit the utility<\/li>\n<li><code>clean<\/code> will remove the partition or volume formatting from the current disk<\/li>\n<li><code>rescan<\/code> can rescann the I\/O buses and can discover new disks added to the computer<\/li>\n<li><code>help<\/code> will display the list of all available commands<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Error Codes<\/h3>\n<p>You can find a list error codes to debug various errors:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Code <code>0<\/code> means that no errors occurred<\/li>\n<li>Code <code>1<\/code> means that a fatal exception occurred<\/li>\n<li>Code <code>2<\/code> means that the parameters you specified for a command are incorrect<\/li>\n<li>Code <code>3<\/code> means that diskpart is unable to open the specified file<\/li>\n<li>Code <code>4<\/code> means that diskpart (one of the services used by the utility) returned a failure<\/li>\n<li>Code <code>5<\/code> means a command syntax error<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>diskpart in Windows XP<\/h2>\n<p>Note that the <strong>fdisk<\/strong> utility found in pre-Windows XP systems is now known as <strong>diskpart<\/strong> on Windows XP systems.<\/p>\n<h3>If you can boot into Windows XP<\/h3>\n<p>If you can boot into your computer, you simply need to open <strong>Command Prompt<\/strong> to access diskpart:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Boot into Windows XP<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Start<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Run<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Type <code>cmd<\/code><\/li>\n<li>Press <kbd>Enter<\/kbd> or click <strong>OK<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>At the Command Prompt window, type <code>diskpart<\/code><\/li>\n<li>Press <kbd>Enter<\/kbd><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>If you can&#8217;t boot into Windows XP<\/h3>\n<p>If you can&#8217;t boot into Windows XP to access diskpart, you have 2 options:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use the original CD to access Recovery Console<\/li>\n<li>Use Easy Recovery Essentials to launch Command Line<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>If you have the original CD:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you can&#8217;t boot into Windows XP, but you have the original CD, you can access the Recovery Console:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Insert the Windows XP CD<\/li>\n<li>Reboot the computer<\/li>\n<li>Press any key to boot from the CD<\/li>\n<li>At the Microsoft Setup menu, press <kbd>R<\/kbd><\/li>\n<li>Select the operating system and enter the Administrator password, if requested<\/li>\n<li>When Command Line appears, type <code>diskpart<\/code><\/li>\n<li>Press <kbd>Enter<\/kbd><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>If you use Easy Recovery Essentials:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Download <a href=\"https:\/\/neosmart.net\/EasyRE\/\">Easy Recovery Essentials<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Burn the ISO Image. If you&#8217;d like to have a recovery USB instead, follow <a href=\"https:\/\/neosmart.net\/wiki\/easybcd\/tips-and-tricks\/easyre-recovery-usb\/\">our instructions on how to make a recovery USB<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Boot Easy Recovery Essentials from the CD, DVD or USB<\/li>\n<li>Select <strong>Launch Command Line<\/strong><img class=\"colorbox-2847\"  decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wiki\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/08\/EasyRE-Home.png\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>diskpart in Windows Vista<\/h2>\n<p class=\"info\">You need to run these steps as an Administrator on Windows Vista systems.<\/p>\n<p>If you can boot into Windows Vista with no errors, <a href=\"#If_you_can_boot_into_Windows_Vista\">follow the If you can boot into Windows Vista set of instructions<\/a>. Otherwise, follow <a href=\"#If_you_can8217t_boot_into_Windows_Vista\">If you can&#8217;t boot into Windows Vista<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>If you can boot into Windows Vista<\/h3>\n<p>You simply need to open Command Prompt, if you can boot into Windows Vista:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Boot into Windows Vista<\/li>\n<li>Click Start<\/li>\n<li>Type <code>cmd<\/code><\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Command Prompt<\/strong> from the search results list. You may need to right-click Command Prompt &gt; Run as Administrator, if you are not logged in as Administrator already<\/li>\n<li>Type <code>diskpart<\/code><\/li>\n<li>Press <kbd>Enter<\/kbd><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"info\">For the full list of diskpart commands and paremeters, go to <a href=\"#Commands_and_parameters\">Commands and Parameters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>If you can&#8217;t boot into Windows Vista<\/h3>\n<p>If you can&#8217;t boot into your system, you have the following options:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use the installation disc to access System Recovery Options<\/li>\n<li>Access System Recovery Options without the installation disc (if installed)<\/li>\n<li>Use Easy Recovery Essentials and access Command Line<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>If you have the installation disc:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you can&#8217;t boot into Windows Vista, but you have the Windows Vista disc, follow these steps to open diskpart:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Insert the original CD\/DVD in the optical drive<\/li>\n<li>Boot your computer<\/li>\n<li>Press any key to boot from the CD\/DVD<\/li>\n<li>Select your language, time and keyboard<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Next<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Repair your computer<\/strong><img class=\"colorbox-2847\"  decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wiki\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/06\/windows-vista-repair-your-computer.png\" alt=\"Windows Vista Repair Your Computer\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Select the operating system<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Next<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>When the <em>System Recovery Options<\/em> screen appears, click <strong>Command Prompt<\/strong><img class=\"colorbox-2847\"  decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wiki\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/06\/windows-vista-system-recovery-options.jpg\" alt=\"Windows Vista System Recovery Options\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Type <code>diskpart<\/code>:\n<pre>diskpart<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Press <kbd>Enter<\/kbd><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"info\">For the full list of diskpart commands and paremeters, go to <a href=\"#Commands_and_parameters\">Commands and Parameters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you don&#8217;t have the installation disc:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If your Windows Vista has the System Recovery Options installed and is available at the Advanced Boot Options menu, you can run Command Prompt from there. <strong>Otherwise, see the &#8220;If you use Easy Recovery Essentials&#8221; set of instructions below.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Follow these steps below to access diskpart without the installation disc:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<ol>\n<li>Reboot the computer<\/li>\n<li>Press <kbd>F8<\/kbd> as your computer starts to boot, but before the Windows Vista logo appears<\/li>\n<li>Select <strong>Repair Your Computer<\/strong>, at the <em>Advanced Boot Options<\/em> menu<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"info\">If a &#8220;Repair Your Computer&#8221; option isn&#8217;t listed, System Recovery Options is not installed on your computer. Right-click on Command Prompt &gt; Run as Administrator.<\/li>\n<li>When Command Prompt loads, type <code>diskpart<\/code><\/li>\n<li>Press <kbd>Enter<\/kbd><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"info\">For the full list of diskpart commands and paremeters, go to <a href=\"#Commands_and_parameters\">Commands and Parameters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>If you can&#8217;t boot into Windows 7<\/h3>\n<p>Similar to Windows Vista, if you can&#8217;t boot into your system, you have the following options:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use the installation disc<\/li>\n<li>Boot into the Advanced Boot Options menu to access System Recovery Options<\/li>\n<li>Use Easy Recovery Essentials and access Command Line<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>If you have the installation disc:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you can&#8217;t boot into Windows 7, but you have the installation disc, you can run diskpart using the disc. To do so, follow these steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<ol>\n<li>Insert the disc in the optical drive of your computer<\/li>\n<li>Restart the computer<\/li>\n<li>Press any key to boot from the disc<\/li>\n<li>Select your preferred language, time and keyboard<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Next<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Repair your computer<\/strong> at the <em>Install Windows<\/em> screen<img class=\"colorbox-2847\"  decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wiki\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/10\/Install-Now-Windows-7.jpg\" alt=\"Install Windows 7 Screen\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Select the operating system from the list<\/li>\n<li>Click Next<\/li>\n<li>Select <strong>Command Prompt<\/strong><img class=\"colorbox-2847\"  decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wiki\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/05\/windows-7-system-recovery-options-screen.jpg\" alt=\"Windows 7 System Recovery Options\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Type diskpart<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/ol>\n<pre>diskpart<\/pre>\n<ol>\n<li>Press <kbd>Enter<\/kbd><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"info\">For the full list of diskpart commands and paremeters, go to <a href=\"#Commands_and_parameters\">Commands and Parameters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you don&#8217;t have the installation disc:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Usually, Windows 7 systems should have the System Recovery Options installed on the hard drive. If it&#8217;s not (follow steps below), <strong>go to the &#8220;If you use Easy Recovery Essentials&#8221; set of instructions below for an alternative to access diskpart.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Follow these steps to access diskpart without an installation disc on a Windows 7:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Restart the computer<\/li>\n<li>Press <kbd>F8<\/kbd> as the computer starts to boot. Press <kbd>F8<\/kbd> before the Windows 7 logo appears.<\/li>\n<li>Select <strong>Repair Your Computer<\/strong> at the <em>Advanced Boot Options<\/em> screen\n<p class=\"info\">If <strong>Repair Your Computer<\/strong> is not listed, System Recovery Options is not installed on your PC.
