This guide details how you can test if your hard-disk is failing or it’s corrupted<\/strong>. You can follow these steps to check the status of your HDD for the following Windows versions: XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 <\/strong>and 10.<\/strong><\/p>\n

To test if your HDD or SSD drive has failed, use the SMART (S.M.A.R.T.) utility that’s already included on the HDD\/SSD drive.<\/p>\n

S.M.A.R.T.<\/strong> stands for Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology. It’s a monitoring system utility already included on the HDD or SSD drive of your computer and it can gauge your computer’s drive reliability.<\/p>\n

Check HDD\/SSD failures with EasyRE<\/h2>\n

    Windows Setup CD\/DVD Required!<\/strong>
    Some of the solutions below require the use of the Microsoft Windows setup CD or DVD. If your PC did not come with a Windows installation disc or if you no longer have your Windows setup media, you can use     Easy Recovery Essentials for Windows<\/a> instead. EasyRE will automatically find and fix many problems, and can also be used to solve this problem with the directions below.<\/p>\n

    You can also run the wmic<\/code> and diskdrive<\/code> commands from Command Prompt to test the status of your hard-disk.<\/p>\n

    1. Insert the Windows installation media (DVD or USB)<\/li>\n
    2. Boot from the media<\/li>\n
    3. At the Welcome<\/em> screen, click Repair your computer<\/strong> to access Command Prompt\n

      You can right-click on Computer to run the chkdsk utility.<\/p>\n
      For Windows XP, Vista or 7, follow these steps:<\/p>\n

      1. Boot into your Windows<\/li>\n
      2. Click Start<\/strong><\/li>\n
      3. Go to Computer<\/strong><\/li>\n
      4. Right-click on the main drive you want to check<\/li>\n
      5. Click Properties<\/strong><\/li>\n
      6. At the Tools<\/em> tab, click Get started<\/strong> at the Error-checking<\/em> section\"chkdsk<\/li>\n
      7. Check the Automatically fix file system errors<\/strong> checkbox<\/li>\n
      8. Click Start<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
        For Windows 8, follow these steps:<\/p>\n

        1. Boot into Windows 8 or Windows 8.1<\/li>\n
        2. Go to Computer<\/strong><\/li>\n
        3. Select the drive you want to check, e.g. C:\\<\/code><\/li>\n
        4. Click Properties<\/strong><\/li>\n
        5. Click Tools<\/strong><\/li>\n
        6. Click Check<\/strong> at the Error checking<\/em> section<\/li>\n
        7. Click Scan Drive<\/strong>. Click to scan the drive regardless if you receive this message from chkdsk:\n
          You don't need to scan this drive\r\n\r\nWe haven't found any errors on this drive. You can still scan the drive for errors if you want.<\/pre>\n
