This guide details how you can troubleshoot and fix a slow boot<\/strong>. This guide details general tips that you can apply for these Windows versions: XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Fixes for a slow boot<\/h2>\n

Fix #1: Check the HDD and\/or RAM<\/h3>\n

If the slow booting of your computer is caused by a failing HDD\/SSD, test your hard disk or RAM memory.<\/p>\n

For more information on how to check HDD\/SSD for failures, read this this guide<\/a>.<\/p>\n

To do so, run Automated Repair from Easy Recovery Essentials (our recovery and repair disc). It will report any issues found with your HDD or RAM memory.<\/p>\n

  1. Download Easy Recovery Essentials<\/a><\/li>\n
  2. Burn the ISO Image. Follow our instructions on how to burn a bootable ISO image<\/a>. If you\u2019d like to have a recovery USB instead, follow our instructions on how to make a recovery USB<\/a>.<\/li>\n
  3. Boot into Easy Recovery Essentials<\/li>\n
  4. Select Automated Repair<\/strong><\/li>\n
  5. Click Continue<\/strong> and wait for the Automated Repair process to finish. Automated Repair process will report any issues found with your hard disk or RAM memory:\n

    Fix #2: Disable startup applications<\/h3>\n

    If the slow booting is caused by a startup software application or service, you can troubleshoot the exact application causing this by disabling each application with the help of the msconfig<\/code> utility.<\/p>\n

    If, after removing\/disabling a specific software application, your computer begins to boot correctly and not slow as it was, the issue can be from that software application. Try to update it to the latest available version.<\/p>\n

    To run msconfig<\/code>, follow these steps:<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Boot into your system<\/li>\n
    2. Click Start<\/strong><\/li>\n
    3. Click Run<\/strong><\/li>\n
    4. Type:\n
      msconfig<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n
    5. Press Enter<\/kbd> or click OK<\/strong><\/li>\n
    6. Go to the Startup or Services<\/strong> tab<\/li>\n
    7. Disable all services listed in this tab<\/li>\n
    8. Click OK<\/strong><\/li>\n
    9. Click Restart<\/strong><\/li>\n
    10. Restart the computer<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
      If your computer still boots slowly, go to Fix #2<\/a>.<\/p>\n
      Fix #3: Delete temporary files<\/h3>\n
      For more information how to delete temporary files, read this guide<\/a>.<\/p>\n
      Large volumes of temporary files (stored in the specific %temp%<\/code> folder on Windows) may slow down your computer, including the booting process.<\/p>\n
      To delete the temporary files on your computer, follow these steps:<\/p>\n
        \n
      1. Start your computer<\/li>\n
      2. Click Start<\/strong><\/li>\n
      3. Click Run<\/strong><\/li>\n
      4. Type:\n
        %temp%<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n
      5. Press Enter<\/kbd> or click OK<\/strong><\/li>\n
      6. Go to Folder Options<\/strong> (Tools > Folder Options for Windows XP; Organize or Tools > Folder Options for Windows Vista or 7)<\/li>\n
      7. Go to View<\/strong><\/li>\n
      8. At the Hidden files and folders<\/em> section, check the Show hidden files, folders, or drive<\/strong> checkbox<\/li>\n
      9. Click OK<\/strong><\/li>\n
      10. Select all files and folders from the Temporary folder<\/li>\n
      11. Right-click and click Delete<\/strong><\/li>\n
      12. Click Yes<\/strong> to confirm the deletion of these files and folders<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
        If you’re not able to boot into Windows to delete the temporary files, use Automated Repair from Easy Recovery Essentials<\/a> (our recovery and repair disc). Besides find and fixing boot errors automatically, it can delete temporary files automatically.<\/p>\n
        Fix #4: Defragment HDD<\/h3>\n
        Having a fragmented hard-disk might slow your computer and how it boots.<\/p>\n
        Using the Disk Defragmenter utility from Windows, you can rearrange the fragmentation of your hard-disk to make it run more efficiently.<\/p>\n
        To defragment your hard-disk, follow these steps:<\/p>\n
          \n
        1. Start your computer and boot into Windows<\/li>\n
        2. Click Start<\/strong><\/li>\n
        3. Search for Disk Defragmenter<\/strong><\/li>\n
        4. At the Current Status<\/em> section, select the disk you want to defragment. If you have multiple disks listed, defragment all disks.<\/li>\n
        5. Click Defragment disk<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
          Fix #5: Check for viruses<\/h3>\n
          Download and run a scan with an up-to-date antivirus software application.<\/p>\n
          If you don’t have one and\/or if you can’t boot into Windows, you can use Easy Recovery Essentials built-in antivirus scanner which can run outside Windows.<\/p>\n

This guide can help you\u00a0identify what version of Windows<\/a>\u00a0you have installed. For the purposes of this guide, you will need to obtain the Professional Edition of EasyRE.<\/li>\n
          2. Burn the image. Follow these instructions on\u00a0how to burn the bootable ISO image<\/a>\u00a0very carefully, as making a bootable CD can be tricky! Alternatively, these instructions explain\u00a0how to create a bootable EasyRE recovery USB stick\/drive<\/a>.<\/li>\n
          3. Boot up your PC\u00a0from the Easy Recovery Essentials CD<\/a>\u00a0or USB you created.<\/li>\n
          4. Once EasyRE is running, choose the “Virus Scanner” option and click\u00a0Continue<\/kbd>.\n

          5. After EasyRE scans your computer’s drives, identify and select the drive letter for your Windows installation\u00a0from the list, and then click on the\u00a0Scan<\/kbd>\u00a0button to begin.\n
          6. <\/strong><\/strong>EasyRE will begin scanning the drive for viruses, rootkits, trojans, spyware, and other unwanted malware on your machine. No intervention is required, and EasyRE will repair viruses as it finds them, reporting its progress as it goes along:\n

            Fix #6: Run Startup Repair<\/h3>\n
            The Startup Repair utility can find and fix various errors that may prevent your computer to boot correctly. If the slow boot is caused by a boot error, Startup Repair will attempt to fix the error.<\/p>\n
            The Startup Repair utility is available only on Windows Vista and Windows 7 systems. For Windows XP systems, follow the next set of instructions, at Fix #7<\/a>.<\/p>\n
              \n
            1. Insert the Windows Vista or Windows 7 installation disc (the install DVD) and boot from it<\/li>\n
            2. At the Welcome<\/em> screen, click Repair your computer<\/strong>\n

              Install Now (Windows 7)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n
            3. Choose your operating system and click Next<\/strong> to continue<\/li>\n
            4. At System Recovery Options, select Startup Repair<\/strong>\n

            5. After Startup Repair finished the process, restart your computer<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
              Fix #7: Run chkdsk and sfc<\/h3>\n
              If you have Windows XP, follow these steps:<\/p>\n

              1. Insert the Windows XP CD and boot from it<\/li>\n
              2. At Welcome to Setup, press R<\/kbd>\n

              3. Type:\n
                chkdsk C: \/r<\/pre>\n
                Replace C:<\/code> is the letter of the drive where Windows is installed.<\/li>\n
              4. Press Enter<\/kbd><\/li>\n
              5. Type:\n
                sfc \/scannow \/offbootdir=c:\\ \/offwindir=c:\\windows<\/pre>\n
                Replace C:<\/code> with the letter of the drive where your Windows XP is installed.<\/li>\n
              6. Press Enter<\/kbd><\/li>\n
              7. Type exit<\/code> and press Enter<\/kbd>. Restart your computer.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                If you have Windows Vista or Windows 7, follow these steps:<\/p>\n
                  \n
                1. Follow the steps from Fix #7<\/a> until you reach Command Prompt<\/strong><\/li>\n
                2. When Command Prompt is loaded, type this command:\n
                  chkdsk C:<\/code> \/r<\/pre>\n
                  Where C:<\/code> is the letter of the drive where your Windows Vista or Windows 7 is installed.<\/li>\n
                3. Press Enter<\/kbd><\/li>\n
                4. Type:\n
                  sfc \/scannow<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n
                5. Press Enter<\/kbd><\/li>\n
                6. Type:\n
                  exit<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n
                7. Press Enter<\/kbd><\/li>\n
                8. Restart your computer<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                  If you have Windows 8 or Windows 10, follow these steps:<\/p>\n
                    \n
                  1. Insert the installation media (DVD or USB)<\/li>\n
                  2. At the Welcome<\/em> screen, click Repair your computer<\/strong>\n

                    Replace C:<\/code> with the letter where Windows 8\/8.1 is installed.<\/li>\n
                  7. Press Enter<\/kbd><\/li>\n
                  8. Type:\n
                    sfc \/scannow<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n
                  9. Press Enter<\/kbd><\/li>\n
                  10. Type:
                    \nexit<\/code><\/li>\n
                  11. Press Enter<\/kbd><\/li>\n
                  12. Restart your computer<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                    Other fixes you can try<\/h2>\n
                    If none of the fixes presented above fixed the slow booting process of your computer, consider these tips:<\/p>\n
                    Tip #1: Delete software you don’t use<\/strong><\/p>\n
                    Software applications that you no longer use can slow your computer.<\/p>\n
                    If you’re not able to boot into Windows, boot into the Last Known Good Configuration<\/strong> or Safe Mode<\/strong> and try to uninstall software applications that you no longer use:<\/p>\n

                    1. Restart your computer<\/li>\n
                    2. Press the F8<\/kbd> key to open the Advanced Boot Options<\/strong> menu\n

                      Tip #2: Upgrade RAM or install SSD<\/strong><\/p>\n
                      If you’ve already checked your HDD or RAM for faults, consider upgrading your RAM memory or switching from HDD to SSD.<\/p>\n
                      Tip #3: Update drivers<\/strong><\/p>\n
                      If you recently added hardware drivers on your computer, make sure you have the latest available version from the manufacturer that’s compatible with the Windows version you’re running: XP, Vista, 7 or 8.<\/p>\n
                      Tip #4: Update or reinstall Windows<\/strong><\/p>\n
                      Updating or reinstalling Windows might fix the slow boot.<\/p>\n
                      Reinstalling Windows means you will loose all data if you don’t backup your personal files.<\/p>\n
                      You can use the Browse\/Backup Files feature from Easy Recovery Essentials<\/a> to access your computer and backup your personal files on a USB drive:<\/strong><\/p>\n
