I have [had!] a 2x w7 + xp dual boot and decided to get rid of xp and reuse its HDD. I tried reformatting its disk from w7 but it would not let me, so I tried to delete all the files on the disk but something [MBR?] is left! Next I tried unplugging the HDDs one at a time to locate the one with xp on it. But the pc would not boot which ever one I tried & allways a "unable to find MBR" message. how do I get out of this mess?

If the initial W7 was installed after XP, then its boot files would have been placed on the "active" partition (XP), so you can't format that partition without moving the W7 boot files first.
