Following an automatic upgrade, my Mac slowed and I could not reliably reach those help menus (needed because this is my first Mac). Apple techies did five resets in attempts to resolve problem, they did verify that the hardware and firmware are okay. I had done backups but learned the hard way about proper ejection of external drives, so I'm not sure if the files are corrupted as a result of incorrectly ejecting the external HD I used for the Time Machine backups as I cannot get into them to review. My knowledge of computers is next to nil , compared to what I read here, and this MacBook has so many weird symbols on it. Previous usage was limited to web surf and mail on a windows based laptop that is a dual OS (Linux and Windows 10) setup. That's a different problem.

If your Mac has slowed down following an automatic upgrade and you have difficulty accessing help menus, here are some steps you can try to resolve the issue:

  1. Check for updates: Go to the Apple menu and select "Software Update" to see if there are any updates available for your Mac. Installing any pending updates may help resolve the issue.
  2. Free up disk space: If your Mac's hard drive is full, this can slow down your system. Use the built-in "About This Mac" tool to see how much disk space you have available and delete any unnecessary files.
  3. Reset the SMC: The System Management Controller (SMC) is responsible for many of your Mac's power and performance-related functions. Resetting the SMC may help resolve the issue. To reset the SMC, follow these instructions: Reset the SMC of your Mac
  4. Reset the NVRAM/PRAM: NVRAM and PRAM are types of memory on your Mac that store settings such as sound volume, display resolution, and startup disk selection. Resetting NVRAM/PRAM may help resolve the issue. To reset NVRAM/PRAM, follow these instructions: Reset NVRAM on your Mac
  5. Reinstall the operating system: If none of the above steps help, you may need to reinstall the operating system. Before you do this, be sure to backup any important data as the process will erase everything on your Mac.
If these steps do not resolve the issue, it may be best to seek further assistance from an Apple support specialist or an authorized repair center. FMC4ME
