Windows 2012 R2 VM reboot problem inaccessible_boot_device

Hi

We have 2 virtual machines out of the several that we have running under windows 2012 R2 Hyper-v if we attempt to reboot the VMs they fail mid boot, stating inaccesible_boot_device. See attached screen dump
I've tried many things over the last few months - too many to list here including chkdsk, bcdboot etc.
We can revert to a running previous checkpoint or a previous running backup and the vm will continue to run, however if we try to reboot then we get the same error mid boot again.
I've just purchased the easy recovery essentials windows 2012 ISO to see if that would help but it seems that it won't boot when the VM is setup as a generation 2 machine with or without secure boot turned on. If I setup a fresh Generation 1 VM and use the existing vhdx file it will boot from the ISO image but then claims no access to the hard disk.
Somewhat at a loss as to what to try next.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
