Resolving the “driver being installed is not validated for this computer” error

To work around the “the driver being installed is not validated for this computer” error experienced when attempting to install the latest Intel graphics display drivers on a workstation running Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 10, the following steps should be followed.

  1. At the Intel downloads page for graphics drivers, select the latest version of the driver applicable to your operating system. For example, at the time of this writing, the latest version of the Intel display driver for Windows 10 machines can be found here.
  2. On the download page, make sure to choose the “.zip” download on the left. This is typically the second option, and has the same file name but ending in “.zip” instead of “.exe” (see image below):
  3. Download the zip file, and extract it to a folder on your PC:
  4. Type “Device Manager” in the start menu to launch the Windows Device Manager
  5. Find your Intel graphics adapter under the section “Display adapters” and right-click it and select “Properties”
  6. Navigate to the “Driver” tab and select “Update Driver”
  7. Choose “Browse my computer for driver software”
  8. At the next dialog, make sure to select “Let me pick from a list of available drivers” and not the “next” button:
  9. Click on the “Have Disk” button in the bottom right
  10. And browse to the folder that you previously extracted the zip file containing the drivers to, then navigate to Graphics, select igdlhy64.inf, and then press the “Open” button

  11. Press the “OK” button:
  12. Select your Intel graphics driver from the list of compatible hardware, then press “Next”:
  13. Windows will now install the new driver for your Intel graphics adapter. You can see Windows 10 installing the 64-bit driver for the Intel(R) HD Graphics P630 device here:
  14. Close the Device Manager and restart your PC
