Black screen of death?

When i start my laptop up, it loads then i get a black screen, no activity im not shure whats going on.

edit: i got my recovrey disk to work.. started then got black screen again.. no activity whats going on?

Drivers? Dead Video card?

XP or VIsta?

Have you tried to do anything from Safe Mode? Need some info here.

its xp a gateway 2 years old.. um i hit f8 when starting does nothing for hours and screen black thats all i no

Can you get into the BIOS? Can you boot from a CD?
