My girlfriend's HP laptop won't boot~ fan is on, lights on keyboard on but has a blank black screen.
Have done the standard hard reset, tried to see if there was anything displayed using a separate monitor..... nothing.
Is there any way of using a recovery disc to boot from disc drive when the screen is black? In other words ordinarily you would mash 'Delete' button or whatever key your computer brand uses, then you get option to actually change boot order on screen, but with the black screen problem on a laptop you can't see anything!

Can you hear any beeps ?
If so, look on HP support website or Bing " HP beep codes" to find out what the number and pattern of beeps indicate.
That's the only way it has to communicate if it can't get as far as the screen driver.

You can try disconnecting from AC power, removing the battery, popping open the back of the laptop and disconnecting the BIOS battery (which is hopefully front and center), pressing the power button (which won't work because all power sources are disconnected), waiting 5 minutes, plugging the AC adapter in (with the two batteries still disconnected), and trying to power it up again. That typically forces the nvram to clear and gets around issues like this.

If it still doesn't work, there's a good chance it's a hardware issue and not a software problem.

(The only exception I know of is older Lenovo models with incredibly bad UEFI implementations that will refuse to ever enter the BIOS if the EFI bootloader is missing or its configuration is corrupted.)
