I have written a short piece on using Easy BCD and NeoGrub to boot Ubuntu 10.04 on a USB drive on a Vista laptop (preinstalled). It is in PDF format and is at

Enjoy - and comments are always welcome. Note that this was based on my own experience due to not being able to shrink my Vista partition. It works great, at any rate. I have most of my favourite apps already installed (including Pandora One and NetBeans 6.9).
