Can't make bootable USB

I'm using Easy USB Creator Lite and can't make a bootable USB. The error is "unable to write boot code to drive. Please check to make sure the drive isn't currently in use and try again." I've tried repeatedly. In spite of the error message the indicator shows "Operation in progress" but I doubt it. I've reformatted it but still no joy. Any help is appreciated!
