Dell 17" laptop suddenly started freezing; mouse pointer vanishes and taskbar at bottom doesn't load

It all started when I tried to change my lock screen picture; it didn't change! Then I was able to start up my laptop to the lock screen, put in my 4 number password and it opened up to the next page; the icons on the left appeared but the tasksbar on the bottom didn't; the mouse pointer vanished; couldn't get anything to work. Tried ctrl -shift-esc but nothiing; Even the windows key didn't work.

I was able to get the computer into safe mode and everything worked OK. The bottom taskbar even appeared. I tried the sfc/ scannow but it didn't find anything wrong. One thing I did find is that windows update was off with the message something went wrong, try again later. The list of previous windows updates below was not there. Couldn't troubleshoot in safe mode. I even tried to change the lock screen picture in safe mode but it still wasn't working.

Someone even suggested tweaking.com and I tried that but that didn't solve the problem. Anyone have any suggestions that will work?

It sounds like Windows Explorer or a recent Windows update may have become corrupted rather than it being a hardware issue, especially since everything works normally in Safe Mode.

A few things I'd try before considering a reinstall:

  • Boot into Safe Mode and uninstall the most recent Windows update (if one was recently installed).
  • Open Command Prompt (Admin) and run:
    • DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
    • After it finishes, run sfc /scannow again.
  • Create a new local user account in Safe Mode and see if the taskbar and desktop load normally when signing into that account. This helps determine whether the issue is limited to your Windows profile.
  • Since Windows Update is also failing, reset the Windows Update components or check if the Windows Update and BITS services are running.
  • If the problem started only recently, try System Restore and roll back to a restore point created before the lock screen issue appeared.
The combination of a missing taskbar, disappearing mouse pointer, and Windows Update errors often points to damaged system files or a corrupted user profile rather than a failing Dell laptop. Let us know your Windows version (10 or 11) and the exact Dell model, as that can help narrow down the cause.
