Dual boot timout nano seconds?

Hi,

Have installed Ubuntu 11.04 from within Win 7 on my little Advent Netbook.

No problems, it's there, but the EasyBCD dual boot selection at startup auto selects with win 7 and gives no time to select Ubuntu, I can see the dual entry for a nano second and its gone.

I have obviously changed the 'time-out value in Easy BCD as well as check it is in msconfig correctly, but no difference.

without Ubuntu installed, I can make the time-out work, but as soon as I add Ubuntu, no mater what I do, it just auto selects win7.

I have managed to make it work by selecting Ubuntu as default selection, then it will do the same, auto-boot into Ubuntu with no choice which then does give me the GRUB screen to choose either win7 or Ubuntu,. but as I mainly use win 7, this is a pain in the proverbial and seems a silly workaround.

I would really like the ability to boot, select win 7 or Ubuntu with a short time-out of around 5 secs defaulting to win 7.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Andrew Wood

Can you post the output of EasyBCD's detailed mode (first page radio button) here in a reply?

And welcome to the forums.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

I have probably... (no, definitely) complicated things a little since my last post!

I tried to uninstal Ubuntu in windows in order to just try the whole process all over again. When I tried this, the Ubuntu uninstaller complained about a missing EasyBCD file (cant remember exactly what, presumably because I had manually tried changing the boot record with Easy BCD). I looked up this problem and found that it is supposedly ok just to delete the entire Ubuntu folder manually and job done.

However, now when I try and reinstall Ubuntu 11.04 in Win 7, it does not add any boot listing at all. To make it worse, if I manually add the boot listing in EasyBCD using GRUB2 option, it does the same as it did before, just flick past the boot choice, but if I select Ubuntu as the primary OS, it does boot into Grub, but complains about no Kernal loaded or something and does nothing.

I then have to reboot the computer with win7 rescue disk and repair the MBR because I can no longer select the WIN 7 option because it flies by too quickly. So, I repair it, get back into windows 7 and am back to square one again!

Not sure how to proceed really.

Would it be best to try a new installation using the install CD (I have made a bootable USB because there is no optical drive) and manually create the partitions etc?

Thanks for your time,, Andrew

Again, I need the output of EasyBCD's detailed mode. Do what you have to in order to get into Windows 7, run EasyBCD, and post that.

Hi and thanks again.

This is how the setup is just now, it is after I have deleted the Ubuntu folder manually (not uninstalled because there was an error with this).

Win 7 is booting correctly like this, but there is no pause on the OS boot choice screen, it just flashes past it.

I am going to try to clean the registry today and re install Ubuntu to see if that lets it enter the Ubuntu into the Windows bootloader.

Appreciate your help, Andrew

Is that the whole of the display ?
You won't get a menu when there's only one entry in the BCD.

Yep, that's it.

But I mentioned, that this is after I deleted Ubuntu.

I will try and reinstall it again now I have cleaned out the Ubuntu entires in the registry and see if it recreates the same speed past the boot menu.

(I mentioned earlier that when I tried re-installing Ubuntu before, it did not even add an entry to the MBR as seen in EasyBCD), hopefully it will add it this time now the registry is cleaner/

Cheers for now, will let you know what happens and post the result.

Regards, Andrew

Installin Ubuntu won't add an entry to the BCD. You'll need to do that manually.

It does if you download 11.04 for windows.

It installs it in the windows enviornment and adds a boot selection, it has worked perfectly on my other two computers, but for some reason I have these problems on this one (which is the only one that has an easybcd edited boot record) Dont know if that is the reason why, but I think it is related.

Anyhow, I am installing the fresh Ubuntu install now to see what happens.

Cheers A

Addendum:

OK, all installed clean with no problems, the folder is there for Ubuntu and I can see the entry at boot for a nano second, it is listed in EasyBCD, there is a timeout value of 10 seconds, but it does not stop.

here is the advanced readout ...

Ok, Reset the BCD added the entries again, timeout as before, but still zips past the boot menu (I can see it there for a split second)

(note, I asked EasyBCD to install, Wubi, I see that it has installed neogrub)

In answer to your question about Neogrub, it was not a maunal entry, it was automatically entered by the Ubuntu Windows installer, so I assume it uses WUBI not GRUB2 now?

So, nothing has changed as far as flashing past the boot menu at startup.

Hope you might be able to suggest another option!

Thanks,

Andrew

Hi,

There is just one HDD, but there is a SD card which is used for windows boost memory thing. However, ever since I installed Windows7 over XP on this machine, there has been a random little partition (D) mounted in Windows which I have not bothered to clear off as I use it for dumping a few files from time to time.

At the risk of trying to pre-emp you, The Ubuntu 11.04 windows installer installs on the same drive without (as far as I know) creating a partition. It can also be un-installed within windows. It does work though, I tried setting the default OS in Easybcd to Ubuntu, and it boots with no issue.

This I guess, if there is no way of finding out exactly why the windows bootloader will not wait, is the way I'll have to leave it, as the Ubuntu boot loader gives the option of booting windows, but it just irritates the anal side of me that just wants it to work properly without this extra unnecessary step!

Any other ideas?

OK, this is just on a whim, but can you try adding a third entry to the menu? Say, the BIOS extender, for example?

Nope, just the same, skips past it in a flash!?

Really irritating. If I uninstall the Ubuntu, everything is normal, it waits to choose the windows seven and that is all that is listed...?

It sounds like Wubi is doing something to the BCD menu that's causing it to go haywire... If you just delete the Wubi entry with EasyBCD, does it also revert to the normal behavior?

yes it does revert to normal behaviour.

I have given up with Ubuntu on this laptop, as it keeps killing everything when i update ubuntu, i have just spent half the day trying to sort out messed up mbr's, new random partition etc etc. it works on my other two, i will just have to accept it not working on this one i guess.

or i'll have to make a partition and install it all manually.

thanks for your help.

best regards, Andrew
