ok i have a friend that has an acer laptop and her system got wiped not sure how no recovery disks came with and so we downloaded your fix it disk but we can't get it to work why ?

Hi criddle, welcome to NST.
The recovery disk hosted here contains no Vista installation files. You can't reinstall a missing OS, only use it to fix the boot on an exising OS.
You'll need to go to the OEM for a set of full recovery media, or borrow a Vista DVD from a friend and install a new copy of Vista, quoting the serial number from your PC, not the one on the DVD.
Are you sure everything is wiped. There should be a hidden recovery partition if Acer didn't provide portable media.
Your user handbook, or a visit to the Acer website, should tell you how to access it and restore your system.
