How to transition into a role focusing on oncology-medical-billing-services?

I am currently working in general RCM and am interested in specializing in more complex fields. Does anyone have advice on which certifications are most valued by firms providing oncology-medical-billing-services? I want to ensure I have the right technical background to handle the high-intensity claim requirements associated with chemotherapy and radiation coding.

Breaking into oncology medical billing isn’t as difficult as it looks—but it does require a more focused approach compared to general billing.

A good starting point is strengthening your foundation in oncology-specific coding and documentation. Oncology cases often involve complex treatments like chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and infusion services, so getting comfortable with CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS codes used in oncology is key.

From there, try to gain exposure wherever possible—this could be through your current role (asking to handle oncology claims), online training programs, or certifications like CPC. Real-world claim handling experience, especially around prior authorizations and denial management, makes a big difference.
