The set comprises the Wireless Laser Mouse 8000 and the Wireless Entertainment Keyboard 8000 plus the magnetic charging station and 4 USB ports (1 of which is occupied by the Bluetooth 2.4ghz dongle).

Whilst I am quite impressed with it's features and ease of use I am NOT impressed with certain other aspects of it.

Minor beef first: Why does it have a numlock when it doesn't have a numeric keypad?
If anyone knows the answer please tell me!

Major beef # 1: It will not work in Safe Mode (so far at least) and although the mouse will work on the log-on screen in regular mode, the keyboard steadfastly refuses to do so.
Having worked with Bluetooth KB and Mouse for years I always have my old standard wired ones connected anyway for such occasions, but one would have thought that after all this ballyhoo and the enormous price they charge for this product, that it would work flawlessly in any mode - even in BIOS!! (& make the coffee!)

Major beef # 2: My Device Manager is filling up with "HID compliant consumer control device" entries as if they are breeding. (See below).
I have tried uninstalling all the duplicates, but as Vista will not tell you what device they apply to I ended up with NO mice working at all - had to reboot and the breeding process renewed itself.
It seems that every time I lose connection with the mouse or keyboard and reconnect Vista thinks it's another new piece of hardware.
This hasn't happened in my XP boots.....yet.

This is all complicated by the fact that I also have 2 other Bluetooth dongles attached - but they seem to behave quite normally, because they are old perhaps? They are to do with my Motorola phone and audio headsets (yes Sarge, the ones I can only get to work once in a blue moon...LOL).

Do you think that maybe I should reinstall Vista?

I seems to lose the drivers when it shuts down. Are you sure it is saving your profile correctly? That would be the only reason why. Unless everytime your PC shuts down it loses the Blut Tooth connection and the USB connection and has to re-install it. Which in that case i would send a little note to M$ saying that their is something faulty with it since it cant keep being re-installed upon every reboot.

I dont think a re-install should be necessary. Could use with a clean up of all those devices though.

Thanks. I did mention this in passing in another thread and CG suggested deleting all the entries as Windows would find the right ones at next boot.
The trouble is I got so far and then my wired mouse wouldn't work either. It isn't that easy to tell which entry applies to what item of hardware. One of Vista's shortcomings, especially when it's installing a driver - it hardly ever tells you what it's for.
I wonder why it's not saving my profile?
There are a few errors in Event Viewer/Custom Views Administrative Events but absolutely no errors in any of the Windows logs. The yellow ones are mostly "out of range" items.

Well i see 2 with the title User Profile Service. That could be where it is causing issues for you. Those could be why your profile isnt saving right.

Event Hive Leak. That is a new one for me to see. So it is saying that your registry is in use and has to be unloaded.

Have you got a good Virus scanner and firewall installed? It almost seems as if one of those proof of concept Vista Vruses might have hit the net. I doubt it but that is something to check for.

Also do you have any other accounts on the PC?

I've got McAfee 2008 installed and nothing untoward has been detected, nor by my anti-spyware apps (SUPERantispyware and Adaware 2007). I even tried a Kaspersky online scan and nothing.

There are 3 users in each of my 2 x XP and 1 x Vista installations (triple boot). Myself (Admin status) my roomie (Standard user status) and Administrator all password protected. Bios also password protected. Guest accounts are turned off.

I think a lot of anomalies here are due to the triple boot situation.

Sorry to take so long to reply, I never got an email notification.....yet!

I have a quad boot. XP Pro, MCE, Vista HP and Vista Ultimate and i dont have this issue.

Could something have happened with your roomies account that is causing this? Also are you logged off both account when you restart the PC? Do both users log off before the other logs on?

I know this seems like a lot of questions but right now i am jsut trying to narrow down the possibilties of what it could be.

My roomie's account is only if his laptop and/or desktop mess up - for emergencies. He hasn't used my machine for ages as he is wirelessly linked to my router (I'm directly wired). I don't bother signing out when I shut down the PC, maybe I should?

Addendum:

I may have to reinstall Vista anyway. I decided that it was most likely my Motorola PC850 Bluetooth dongle that was causing problems as it isn't really Vista compatible, but by installing it in a certain way you can make it work.
So I uninstalled it, should have left well alone. It took the entire Bluetooth stack with it and I had to then reinstall keyboard and mouse the long way. Vista is not very well designed in this area. You have to go online to search for drivers first before it will even offer to look on your hard drive. So I had to go through 2 HID device installs, plus actual mouse and keyboard installs.
That took the best part of an hour.
Then Vista tried to install things that I had previously told it to ignore. Like the PC850 dongle (again) that I use in my XP boot, and the Moto D200 headset dongle which doesn't require any installation anyway and is totally Vista ready, but Vista insists it does until it finally gives up.
This will now happen everytime either my mouse or keyboard lose connection.
If that makes any sense...good luck!!

Well i seen from the picture that the mouse/keyboard are from Microsoft. Maybe you can send them a email to their support area and see if they have any working drivers or a way to get them working without this issue coming up yet again.

Even a re-install still wont solve this as it will take another hour for Vista to find your keyboard/mouse. And then it will try to install the dongle again. Which really is a bad way to do things. But this is M$.

I'm not paying $59 Canadian for the usual unhelpful answers that I've seen in the past.
One would think that service for a new article would be free, but not with M$, plus, despite the fact that our dollar is now worth more than the US $, we still have to pay more than a US person would.
Initially Vista had no problem with drivers, except for my PC850 dongle, but it was when I uninstalled that little monster that the Bluetooth stack suddenly vanished.
I'll stick with it for a while and see how things go.
Thanks for the advice anyway.

The Canadian dollar is worth more than the US one now!? :|

wow... I had no idea the USD went that low!!!! I remember it was > 1.5:1 back in the day.

It was US$1.03 = CA$1.00 as of close of markets Friday. Not only that but we are up against the British Pound and the Euro.
The old greenback has taken a beating all around as the US steadily grinds itself into a hole thanks to their stupid Government and it's hare-brained policies.
It's been 30+ years since it was that high.

That is rather astounding.... Hopefully the Democrats can set things right come 2009.. but that's a long time to go and still a lot more worse to come until then! :x

According to yahoo...

U.S. Dollar to Canadian Dollar Exchange Rate - Yahoo! Finance

It is Us $1 to canadian $0.917 so the American dollar is still worth just a tad bit more. But yes we ahev taken a hit here cause of our War on Terrorism. No one likes what we have done over in Iraq and we are paying for it economically. Which i think sucks since we are the biggest importer in the world. Even though we could make 90% of the stuff ourselves.

I will ask in the private newsgroups and see if anyone there has come up with any solutions or can come up with something for you.

No, that means that 91.7 CAD cents are equal to a single US dollar - meaning the CAD is worth more than the USD ATM.

Meh. Either way. It dont matter. No one looks up to the US for anything good anymore. But yet when things go wrong they look to us to be the first ones there to police things. But that is all the political stuff that doesnt matter. This govt has been corrupt since the day it was founded. But i wouldnt leave it. :tongueout:

Sorry to disagree but the above rate means the US dollar is worth only 97cents (as of today) Canadian i.e. less than ours.

To get back to the original subject ...I reinstalled Vista and this time was extra careful installing Bluetooth stuff and everything now works as it should.

LOL........ by the way, noone answered my very first question. Why does this keyboard have a numlock when it has no numeric keypad....I thought you only needed one with the other?
