No Menu

Hi to All

In a nut shell the problem I've got is a lack of a boot menu to select from I'm not totally unfamiliar with boot managers as I've used Linux before but I'm still very green and I think I'm over my head with this one as the Linux ones seemed to set everything up automatically on installation however I would like to be able to win this battle so this is the situation

I'm trying to boot into either Windows 7 or XP the former being my active partition OS so installed EasyBCD v1.72 followed the wiki to the letter then when I pressed “Add Entry” I got an “Unhandled Exception” anyway rebooted but no boot menu selection it went straight into Windows 7 that was yesterday so today I went into XP via 7 and tried the precedure again this time no error message so I thought that's it great however on rebooting still no boot menu so I decided to download iReboot this is when it seems to get strange on right clicking on the icon there's the two OS so I clicked on XP it rebooted and went into XP.

So it seems that although the setting up went slightly off true I seem to have some sort of dual boot system so I can now test Windows 7 and still have access to XP without having to swap between image files but at the moment it still means I have to be in one of the OS before I can have a choice ideally I would like the menu to have the choice at the beginning.

Any help would be most appreciated and sorry for the long post.

Thanks:smile:

Hi Ade, welcome to NST.
Do you have timeout set to a non-zero value (EasyBCD view settings) ?
If so, can you paste the contents of the view settings window in debug mode.
If you have no menu, how did you boot XP ?
Have you copied the XP boot files to the "system" partition ?
Read the sticky thread and get yourself a copy of EasyBCD 2.0. It will almost completely automate the configuration of XP for you.

Hi Terry thanks for the reply

I think this is the debug information

I was able to boot into XP from iReboot installed in 7

I dont remember that instruction about the XP boot files in the Wiki so I suppose the answer is no?

Just an update I've found even if for some reason I have to reboot when I'm in XP perhaps after a software install I can't get back in it goes into 7

Thanks:smile:

Go into "change settings" and make the timeout 5 or 10 or 30 or however long you want to see the menu for.
I find 5 seconds is enough to let me choose the non-default system, without unduly delaying an unattended boot of the default.
If you hit the arrow keys to select an OS you stop the clock anyway, so it's really 5 seconds to hit a key, then as long as you need to make a decision.

Hi Terry thanks for the reply

That change did the trick BRILLIANT.

Just an observation but perhaps for the likes of myself (The very green non techies) it could be considered adding graphics to the text in the Wiki you know what they say “A picture is worth a thousand words”.

I will get Beta 2 now.

Many thanks
