Nonfunctional LinuxMint12/Lisa boot menu selection

Hi!
I have succeeded in adding LinuxMint 12 as an entry, in my Windows 7 multi-boot menu.

I have the installation in an Extended Partition named sda3. The logical partitions inside this, relevant to the LinuxMint installation are:
  • sda9 boot (containing grub and the PBC -- I didn't overwrite the Windows 7 whole-drive boot sector, during Mint's installation -- I selected instead sda9)
  • sda10 root
  • sda11 swap
  • sda12 home

When I select LinuxMint 12 from the boot menu I get:
  • a black screen displaying the following line
  • Starting cmain ... (hd0,8)
    [Multibook-kludge, loadaddr=0x100000,text-and-date=0x639d, bss=0x0, entry=0x100950]
  • a locked-up system and the only way out is the hard-reset button.

hd0 is correct, because it's the first hard drive, but the PBC is on 9, not 8 -- and I don't see any way of selecting this. Unless I'm misinterpreting it ...

The entry was made with the GRUB2 option selected.
? What should I do to get a menu selection that will start LinuxMint??

How many gigabytes away from the start of the drive are the Linux partitions?
Looking at a partition map and adding it up, I would say about 113.75. The entire drive is 128gb.

The Extended Partition begins at 37gb. If I were to extend that all the way to the end of the drive, then move Program Files (Windows 2000 and Windows 7), Data, Miscellaneous all the way back in the Extended Partition, then reinstall Mint boot and swap at the front, Mint could begin at 37gb, instead ... would the risk of doing all this, in your opinion, be worth the benefits?

But ... if I could just get it running without going through this, that would be nice. Reason: once Windows 7 is as customized and functional as Windows 2000 Professional now is, then I'll delete the Win2K partition, at the front of the drive, and put Mint in its place. Then, Mint will be the first OS on the drive.

In addition, note that I elected to set up a PBR, instead of overwriting the drive's boot record. Any comments as to whether or not this affects EasyBCD's operation, or the over-all system stability after the multi-boot has been set-up?

Hi Computer Guru
Is there any hope I can do this, with EasyBCD?
Do you need any more information about the problem or my setup?
RonCam

Have you tried adding the entry with EasyBCD 2.2 beta? EasyBCD 2.2 Beta Builds
Thanks for letting me know this problem is solved in the latest Beta version. I will try that now.

The problem I'm experiencing is with (what I think is?) the current stable version, as noted in the first post of this thread, under the heading 'Addendum'.

For why I wanted to wait for your reply, see the PM, just now sent.

I haven't received any PMs from you, and I don't know whether or not this issue is fixed in the latest beta.

I couldn't boot to my Ubuntu build from 2.2 build 173 either. Just downloaded build 175 and will try it out. I'm also confused about getting other active Linux partitions that are on my drives listed and booting from EasyBSD.

I haven't received any PMs from you ...
Sorry, Computer Guru, the 'PM' was accidentally sent to your E-mail, because I clicked on the wrong icon! >.<

Since spamless is now in the thread, following your advice (try the betas) I hope he will post his success with build 175. LinuxMint is essentially a reworked Ubuntu, so it's likely that whatever works for his problem (the one in the first sentence of his post) will be of help to me, also.

I'll let spamless finish the thread, and post a with a new subject, if my problem (refer to first post in thread) persists.

Thanks!!

One more thing ...

Thanks, Computer Guru and spamless -- I'll go ahead with build 177.

Only one 'loose end' remains in this thread, and that is:
How many gigabytes away from the start of the drive are the Linux partitions?
? I am wondering about the reason for this question.

You'll note my LinuxMint partitions are, in fact, very far away from the start of the drive.

Should I be concerned that this may cause some difficulty with the proper operation of EasyBCD?

And if 'yes' -- is there some workaround?

Some older motherboards cannot boot an OS past the 137GB marker. Doing so requires something known as 48-bit LBA support.

LBA/Large Mode motherboard specs

... Doing so requires something known as 48-bit LBA support.
Excellent idea! I never would have thought of that. I pulled the motherboard's manual to check on its specs.

LBA-Large Mode.png

It's an ASROCK 4 Core Dual-VSTA. Any comments, please post.

One interesting point in the manual's entry: it says LBA should be disabled for UNIX -- making me think, maybe it could be trouble for GNU/Linux, also??

On the next boot, I'll verify it's enabled. Then, try the latest beta.

[RESOLVED] Nonfunctional LinuxMint12/Lisa boot menu selection

In the end, the solution was easy! Don't follow the directions.:tongueout:

Yes, LinuxMint 12 uses GRUB2, but after seeing another user's success with a work-around, I decided to try doing the same. Select instead Legacy GRUB, then use the drop-down menu to select the partition (in my case it was on a partition, not the entire drive) where the grub bootloader was installed.

The resulting Windows Boot Menu entry -- just worked, immediately.

On another subject, I would suggest someone revisit the Wiki, to see if the "convoluted process" described there, for Ubuntu, is still needed. Since Mint is based on Ubuntu (10.04+ is mentioned), after experiencing repeated failures to generate a working Windows Boot Menu entry, I began to suspect that Mint shared this bug.

I can report it does not, since the present success was achieved easily and without going through a "convoluted process".
