Old Windows 8 machine -> upgrade to 8.1 to then get to at least 10

Hello

I have an external drive with 3 partitions, I use it with different machines for storage. It's the only thing I have to hand with enough storage to put Win 8.1 install onto. So that's on there. It's partition 3 that's formatted ExFAT which is bootable. Partition 1 is 200M and I think it's the drive backup tool or something, and then Partition 2 is MacOS Time Machine

So I used EasyBCD and set the boot loader, but whether I boot the Asus Aspire 3 in UEFI or Legacy it doesn't want to boot to the external drive. It seems to be possibly trying but then there's a generic Windows error message (text only) about not being a valid install or something.

I seem to have read somewhere that perhaps you have to format the C: drive in order to install Win 8.1 over Win 8.0 as Win8 is no longer supported. Is this true? Or can I install 8.1 over 8.0? I'm asking because it's a friend's machine and I think I've backed up everything (docs, images, videos) but cannot be sure.

If I do format C: will the USB drive now be bootable with a EasyBCD boot menu?

Thanks for any help
