Hi fellas,

I really need your help. My brain just cannot figure out what is going wrong.

I have tried to restore Vista using the recovery option and it couldn't find the install.

I reinstalled xp on my vista PC (after vista was installed) so my grandson could play games etc. Anyway, now I have no option at all to boot into VISTA at all.

I downloaded your excellent program and all seemed well, except. I have installed xp on a system that looks like this:

1 x Physical Drive
\
partition 1 (70gb) Windows XP - C:\
partition 2 (72gb) Windows Vista D:\

I have already managed to lose lots of data by messing up the XP boot option once.

I recreated missing\deleted boot files on the new C:\ xp install. Reset the BCD storage.

Code:
Windows Boot Manager

identifier              {9dea862c-5cdd-4e70-acc1-f32b344d4795}
device                  partition=\Device\HarddiskDmVolumes\PhysicalDmVolumes\BlockVolume1
description             Windows Boot Manager
locale                  en-US
inherit                 {7ea2e1ac-2e61-4728-aaa3-896d9d0a9f0e}
default                 {447665fe-8a30-11dd-89d2-000feaed1487}
displayorder            {447665fe-8a30-11dd-89d2-000feaed1487}
                        {447665ff-8a30-11dd-89d2-000feaed1487}

Windows Boot Loader

description             Windows Vista
systemroot              \Windows

Real-mode Boot Sector
---------------------
identifier              {447665ff-8a30-11dd-89d2-000feaed1487}
device                  partition=\Device\HarddiskDmVolumes\PhysicalDmVolumes\BlockVolume1
path                    \NTLDR
description             Windows XP
The thing I didn't realize the first time is that U:\ (at vista) so I have searched the forums and read that means unrecognized. (wish I did that before re-booting last time).

So in brief - I lost all MBR/boot files relating to my vista install when I formatted my XP HD.

In XP I think it would look like this.

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate"

Can someone please help me change the U:\ to a D:\ or instruct me how to do it?

Any help will be reward in thanks.

Best

John

There are a total of 2 entries listed in the Vista Bootloader.
Bootloader Timeout: 5 seconds.
Default OS: Windows Vista

Entry #1

Name: Windows Vista
BCD ID: {default}
Drive: U:\
Bootloader Path: \Windows\system32\winload.exe
Windows Directory: \Windows

Entry #2

Name: Windows XP
BCD ID: {447665ff-8a30-11dd-89d2-000feaed1487}
Drive: \Device\HarddiskDmVolumes\PhysicalDmVolumes\BlockVolume1
Bootloader Path: \NTLDR
the D:\ is there but the program will only allow me to select C:\ as a vista install. I'm lost.

If an experienced person could write me a MBR for the config above or tell me how to fix I would be grateful. Any other info i can provifde please ask.

Thanks for the fast reply.

I have done everything except nuke option

I have vital password etc on vista but do not want to risk not being able to boot back into XP if the advanced repair using the command prompt goes wrong.

bootrec.exe /fixmbr
x:\boot\bootsect.exe /nt60 all /force
What does that command do?

my primary boot is C:\ and my Vista install is on D:\

del C:\boot\bcd
bcdedit /createstore c:\boot\bcd.temp
bcdedit.exe /store c:\boot\bcd.temp /create {bootmgr} /d "Windows Boot Manager"
bcdedit.exe /import c:\boot\bcd.temp
bcdedit.exe /set {bootmgr} device partition=C: **do I cnage this to D???***
bcdedit.exe /timeout 10

del c:\boot\bcd.temp
Is there no way to just point the MBR to D:/ so I can use both? Sorry if that sounds stupid. I am way over my head here.

If I am able to get the vista BCD to point to D:/ and not U:/ I should be able to select that installation in the vista recovery console off the CD. At the moment the CD cannot find any installs of Vista and nothing else bar Nuke it all has helped :frowning:

You use "change settings" in EasyBCD to change the "u" drive (don't forget to hit "save")
Change it to point to the "active" "system" partition (not necessarily the XP drive) and make sure that that partition contains the necessary XP boot files in its root. See the wiki for instructions on dual booting XP with Vista
