purchased repair disk does not recognise hard drive

Purchased vista 64-bit recovery disk. I had deleted ubuntu partition and computer will not boot. bios sees my hard drive. Gateway recovery disk (with no repair feature) recognizes hard drive. I do not want to erase the drive unless last resort.

Auto repair says no hard drive. Command prompts gets :the device is not ready. I am trying to fixmbr. Any ideas on what to try next appreciated.

Addendum:

Thanks to all the info available here I found a solution.

Downloaded Partion Wizard for free and created a bootable disk. Was able to bebuild Mbr.
