sp1 windows vista installation troubleshoot

hello forum,

i've recentlsp1 at 2.9ecovered a presario desktop that would not boot a preinstalled vista os using testdisk to recover the system recovery partition and flagged it to boot

it seems the recovery partition was a bit damaged, some programs weren't recovered, dll files were missing but i consider myself lucky, i'm sure there are situations where recovery requires more effort, i created a thread a month back in regards to the aforementioned issue here, special system and os recovery for presario sr2170nx, i'd like to thank ex_brit for his correspondence, he provided a great deal of help to fix that

although now i have a new problem, don't know if the inquiry belongs here, if not some redirection would be appreciated

i'm in the process of updating drivers, hardware, and software for the presario and have an issue with installing sp1

i've come across this problem before, with sp2 in the past, downloading the standalone solved this, i didn't have issues downloading sp1 from windows update then either if my memory serves correct

windows update also shows sp1 at 1.9 mb, i know that isn't correct so i haven't bothered installing it

i've researched this error without proper response from microsoft in regards to the issue directly, read through related kb articles, used the various fixit tools, but again nothing directly related has been found to fix this

it seems this is a problem with a variety of ways to address it so i ask if there is one in particular that will fix this

all help and suggestions are greatly appreciated

thank you for reading

Vista SP1 installed through WUD is fine provided you don't panic.
It reached a stage at nearly complete (9x% can't remember the exact %) where the screen went blank, and the keyboard and mouse both froze.
People who hit reset at this point found themselves with an unusable PC.
I went away and made a pot of tea, returning at intervals to observe the HDD activity LED.
I waited till the activity light had ceased (and then 30 minutes for luck) before hitting reset.
The PC booted fine into SP1.

hello terry

thank you for replying

although i follow your reply it doesn't address my issue

sp1 in wud shows 1.9 mb install size, thats incorrect size

any suggestions to fix inside wud

Are you sure that 1.9Mb isn't just a pre-req for the 65Mb ?
I'd be very surprised if a WUD of such age exhibited such an obvious error without being noticed and fixed.
What does the context menu "details" say ?

If you have your own key I can offer you a complete Vista w/SP2 DVD ISO x86 or x64 That way you can reinstall the whole thing and cut out many updates. There still would be a whole bunch of course.
