Vista Boot Problems

A friend of mine is having problems getting his laptop to boot, its saying a hardware error has caused this.

Im not computer wizz bit i no a little software wise etc etcc etc

Here is the message its says

" this error can be caused by unplugging a removable storage device such an an external USB drive while the device is in use, or by
faulty hardware such as a hard drive or CD-ROM drive that is failing. Make sure any removable storage is properly connected and then restart your computer.

If you continue to recieve this erro message, contact the hardware manafacturer

File: /windows/system32/winload.exe

Status : 0xc00000e9

Info: an unexpected I/O error has occured. "

I tryed to find the recovery thing on the start up page but it has not come up.

He said he plugged in his printer then a few days later is started doing this,

i forgot to jot down the model of the laptop buts its a packard bell.

Any ideas,

Cheers.
