I had an empty partition that I formatted and to which I directed the install. The main system went into that partition correctly. Apparently all of the boot data was installed on a completely different disk. Go figure ...

It'd be nice to know the precise circumstances under which W7 installs boot files other than with the OS so we can advise appropriately, but it's a bit difficult to see.
My working hypothesis was that allowing W7 to see unformatted space was the trigger, but your experience contradicts that, so it still remains a puzzle awaiting solution.
