Win 11+Win 11 Boot Problem

Hello!

I have put together a new computer and I want to run two Win 11 Operating systems, installed on two separate drives. One on an M.2 SSD, the other one on a SATA SSD.

They were both installed while no other drive connected. Now both drives are, and both Windows installations work when booting and selecting boot drive with BIOS boot menu (for lack of a better term - F8 on launch).

Today I set up a boot menu with EasyBCD. When I restart the computer, I get the boot menu and can select between my two Windows installations. Option 1, the one on the M.2 (the drive where I installed EasyBCD), boots fine. However, when I select the other O/S, I am getting the attached screen.

Would someone have an idea what I could do to get it running? I don't think there is an issue with the winload.efi file, because I can still boot that one when selecting that drive as boot drive through the BIOS.

Thank you!

Denis

There are a total of 2 entries listed in the bootloader.

Default: Denis
Timeout: Skipped
EasyBCD Boot Device: C:\

Entry #1
Name: ABC
BCD ID: {current}
Drive: C:\
Bootloader Path: \WINDOWS\system32\winload.efi

Entry #2
Name: XYZ
BCD ID: {d9497326-2314-11f0-8402-bb046aaa98aa}
Drive: Z:\
Bootloader Path: \Windows\system32\winload.efi

Hi!
Thank you for the reply, I appreciate the help!
Unfortunately, I am not making progress.
  • I ran easyBCD as admininstrator (checked the "Run as administrator" box under properties for easybcd.exe) on the M.2 system
  • I am not quite sure what you mean by "edit the problematic entry". I am assuming you mean to verify the two below? Both point to Z: for the SATA drive ("problem drive")

I don't see anything wrong. Am I missing something? Or did I misunderstand what you were saying I should look for?

When I try to run bcdedit, it closes as soon as it's opened. I am not sure what's up with that...

I also tried to set it up here, but I am seeing the same message when selecting the SATA drive in the startup boot menu.

Is there anything else I could try?

Thank you! (I hope all those images I inserted end up in the right place LOL)

Hold on, on second look, I see that the disk manager shows only Basic Data Partition for the Z: drive. Is that the issue? But then again, why does that one boot just fine when booting from that drive with the BIOS boot drive selection??

PS: However, when I boot the SATA windows, it is also showing me just a basic data partition for the M.2 drive, so I guess that is normal?

Just a proposal: Renounce on EasyBCD and start the Systems using the standard procedure, with two entries it should be no problem. EasBCD is actually designed for systems lower than Win11 an cannot cover all UEFI boot options which work on Win10 & lower (MBR / BIOS) AFAIK. On another PC with Win10 & lower (MBR / BIOS) I have 11 entries and all work without any problems...
I'm also planing to install Win11 on my new PC on a different drive (my first drive is a SSD) and will se how it behaves...
It's always good to have a second working sytem if the first fails...
