Windows 7 partition won't boot (only my XP partition!)

Hi

I am having a problem that is very frustrating. I have my default OS (Windows 7) on my C: partition and have created another partition (D) and installed Windows XP on it. I've used easyBCD to put an entry in the bootlog and choosing between operating systems is no problem.

XP boots every time without fail when I need it, but I'm having problems booting windows 7. The boot process gets so far as the blue background (not the desktop) and then my PC shuts down!

I have done 2 reformats of Windows 7 by using my windows CD. Without easyBCD installed, Windows 7 works well, and turns on all the time, but I have no option to switch to XP without EasyBCD.

When I use EasyBCD and have two entries in the boot log, it seems Windows 7 will not open.

Any one have any suggestions on this?

Thanks
Robin

Post the contents of EasyBCD "view settings" (detailed mode) and a screenshot of your DIsk Management.
(details in the sticky if you need them)

You are using EasyBCD 2.0 ?

The EasyBCD version I'm running is 2.0.2

I'm not sure I see how EasyBCD can have anything to do with this. When you add an XP entry, the Windows 7 entry is not affected in any way, shape, or form.

Can you boot into Safe Mode?

(bash the f8 key repeatedly after selecting "Windows 7" from the boot menu)

Two things you shouldn't be doing.
1) Letting XP see the W7 partition
Hack XP to prevent it damaging W7 restore points
If you aren't bothered with Windows system restore (why not - it's a life saver !), so don't mind XP seeing W7, then,

2) Letting a nonC running Windows see another non-running WIndows called C:

Various 3rd party apps (notably the ubiquitous Adobe stable, like Reader and Flash) will install stuff into C:\Program Files\Common Files even when you install the main app into D:\My Programs.
If you have them installed on the C: system too (which you generally do if you have them at all), the 2 installs will clash with unpredictable effects on both systems.

Did you modify the W7 entry in the BCD yourself in any way, or just add XP ?
When you fixed W7 and booted it OK, then added XP to the BCD, did you successfully boot W7 again before trying XP, or are these failures to boot W7 only happening after you've been in XP and tried to return to W7 ?

Check in "Edit Boot Menu" that Windows 7 is checked as the default.
Check in Bootloader Setup that "MBR Configuration Option" is set to "Install the Windows Vista/7 bootloader to the MBR.
Windows 7 bootloader is veery different from XP's

My View settings are

Default: Windows 7
Timeout: 8 seconds
Boot Drive: C:\

Entry #1
Name: Windows 7
BCD ID: {current}
Drive C:\
Bootloader path: \Windows\system32\winload.exe

Entry #2
Name: Microsoft Windows XP
BCD ID: {5c512eab-3239-11df-a5ea-00248cbb0afc}
Drive: F:\
Bootloaderpath: \NTLDR

My Windows XP is on the F partition of my 500 GB hard drive split into 3 partitions. Windows 7 was loaded first. There is an article "Windows 7 - Dual Boot Installation with Windows 7 and XP" at this web site
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/8057-dual-boot-installation-windows-7-xp.html
Hope this helps. Took me a while to make it work but when done BCD works great.
