I can boot vista with no problem but when I try to boot xp my computer just restarts and goes to the boot loader menu again.

I have vista on my c drive and xp on my E drive. they are on two separate hard drives.

one more thing. this is a fresh install of both vista and xp with nothing to lose. should I try reinstalling xp to get it to work or is there another workaround?

naw, no need for that.

In EasyBCD go to the second section and change the drive letter for XP to C:

woops. I screwed something up. I just will reinstall both Operating systems and hopefully that will fix it. the only harm done will be a very late night for me. Im not used to working with the OS boot menus so this is a big learning experience for me.

installing xp right now on drive E. vista on drive C in a few minutes when done.

ok, can I even do this spread across 2 hard drives or do I have to use one for the operating systems and use the second for data storage?

You can do it any way you like.
You can have different operating systems on different partitions or on different drives, no problem.

Install XP first, Vista second.
