yup I tried that again and ubuntu 's grub is installed on the same hard drive as ubuntu . NOW I get to a page with ubuntu listed and I click on it and a page with the following on it :

Booting ubuntu (etc )
root (hd0,0)
(then a long message including ): warning unrecognised partition table for drive 80 (etc etc )
please rebuild using FDISK tool(err-22) (etc etc )
Error 17 file not found
press any key to continue

what's happening there ?

Addendum:

Yes that is what he asked for. When he gets a minute he will review it and let you know. Thank you for your patience.

Your Detailed Configuration is fine - I had needed it for when you had the following error:

File\NST\NeoGrub.mbr
status 0xc000000f
the selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt

But according to the latest message you're now seeing, you have a corrupt MBR so GRUB can't load Ubuntu.

grub cant load ubuntu

guru ,

this is correct if I try to load grub from the easy boot up list , ubuntu will not load from grub and produce that message however if I go to the F11 boot list and choose the drive with ubuntu on ... I DID install grub to the same drive as in the wiki ...ubuntu will load from the grub menu .... of course it may be a different menu but with the same data !!??

anyway this corrupt mbr can be repaired ???? if so how ? like this ? > manage bootloader > write MBR ? and if this is the correct procedure will this impact on the other entries ?

thnx again richard

You can give the "Write MBR" option a shot, but I don't guarantee it'll fix it - it won't hurt though.

MBR rewrite had no effect

on the above situation ... is there nothing i can do to get to ubuntu thru the easy bcd boot list ?

can u give me the 'syntax ' (if that's the right word) to add to the .lst . The grub for ubuntu is on the 3rd hard drive ..... I installed ubuntu as per the wiki ... so the grub/ swap etc should be 'uncomplicated ' .....

thanks richard

For Ubuntu on the 3rd drive it would be

hdc or hd2,X where X is the partition number.

Remember with partitions and drives the 0 (Zero) counts. So they start at 0 and move on from there. So 3 is 2 and so on.

But you also need the right paths to initrd and the kernel.

thnx ... so what would the correct 'syntax' for the menu.lst for a normally installed ubuntu be .... I have no idea !!!!

There is no correct sytax cause each system is different and unique. I have Ubuntu installed at a different place then you or Guru and so on. We can not give you that answer becuase every system is different.

That depends on your hard drive setup. You already asked what you would use for Ubuntu on the 3rd drive which i gave. Now you just need to figuer out what partition.
