With dial-up you simply see a logon prompt where you simply enter the user name and password there when clicking on the dasktop shortcut for AOL, Netzero, or whichever other provider you go through. Cable is direct access there. That's an instant connection more or less web browsing while sitting in front of your tv if you run that type or through a direct access modem. For email there you generally use an online email account anyways.
