run
bootsect.exe all /force /mbr
bootsect.exe all /force

i assume you meant bootsect.exe /nt60 all /force /mbr as without the nt60 it wouldn't work but did both and still got

'missing operating system'

check your BIOS boot order?

#26
i checked that. no luck. in the meantime - my new replacement hdd has arrived and i removed all other hdd's and then installed this one and installed win7 to it. 20mins - working PC.

next problem - i have reconnected the failed win7 disc and windows detects the disc fine but computer managed says 'Disk 1 - Dynamic - Invalid' and wont let me re-activate.

Now that i have a working win7 - can easybcd help me to get the partitions recognisable again.

**at the very least i can use ubuntu to transfer stuff across but it would be so much easier to get them all viewable.

that explains a lot of stuff. if it's being seen as a dynamic disk, it'll give you lots of problems with booting and all the boot tools.

I recommend just copying the entire contents of the old HD to a subfolder of the new one from an ubuntu live CD, then copying what you need from within Windows.

There are tools that could help you get your partition viewable from Windows once more, but I don't think it's worth the risk if you're already so close.

figured as much. got new partitions all set to go on the new hdd as this hdd is much bigger than the currently failing one. will use ubuntu to copy stuff off and then wipe it clean.

thanks for all your tips and tricks though. i have managed to catch up on a lot in the last day or so and will put it to good use on here helping others and with my mates as well!

after all that - when i converted my new disk to dynamic and rebooted, it reported the old drive to be a foreign disk that i could import. and low and behold - no damage to files - and a simple easybcd operation would have move the boot stuff over from the new hdd to the old hdd. worth remembering for dynamic disk issues. have a hdd drive spare!

Wait, did you convert your new disk to a dynamic disk too? *cringe*

That's not a good idea. Dynamic Disks are Microsoft's (failed and no longer used) attempt at software "fake RAID" to expand a volume to span multiple disks. They're *very very* not supported by most software, and will give you lots of trouble!

If your system is all set, I say clone the contents over to a new basic (i.e. non-dynamic) disk.

Cool! I've always had to recommend formatting, nice to know there may be an easy way out.

was just about to ask how to convert dynamic to basic with least amount of fuss.... this site rocks! answer questions before you ask!

Addendum:

ok - what is best to clone the win7 boot drive from a dynamic to a basic. i want to make sure i get this right!

With those steps you shouldn't need to clone anything since you're just changing the dynamic disk back to a basic one, though you should do a backup of the data in case something goes wrong.

#36
those steps don't work on win7 though as the tools can't be installed (xp only) otherwise would be great. also - having issues with cloning across to spare drive as the spare drive doesn't like dynamic partitions now.... really confused by this - unless the spare hard drive is on its way out as well (annoying as only 6 months old)

Addendum:

ok - missed the testdisk 6.6 instructions - apologies. trying to figure out how i would use it

Addendum:

ok. testdisk is amazing. to convert the disk into basic from dynamic from within windows! with no issues! superb.

all sorted now and rejigging partitions to suit my needs! brilliant!
