Gateway LT2016u

Where do I start.....I zero'd out the harddrive on the LT2016u, but prior to that I made the PQSERVICE recovery partition visible and copied the entire thing over to a USB thumbdrive. When I attempt to do a full reinstall back to factory I am able to start the process get thru about 4 steps and then gives me an error "Restore failed - Can not find image path:M:\D2D\Images\*.SWM" then the computer reboots. I also created a "M" partition on the harddrive itself copied the files back and still nothing. I double checked and all the files are within the subfolder on the HDD & the USB. I shouldn't have listened to the non-processing side of my brain and left XP instead of putting 7 on it !!!!!! ANY IDEAS???

I'm thinking it was the hidden recovery partition, cause that is where the D2D folder is at. I got the recovery to work one time before I zero'd out the drive while the files were still on it's own partition & with the help of the same files on the thumb drive as well. That is why I never made actual recovery disc's not to mention it is a netbook & I don't have a external cd/dvd drive.

Remember that partition letters (or any other device) aren't real (they're not on the device). They're just figments of the imagination (entries in its registry) of the running OS.
If you create a partition and call it M:\ with a working OS, It's only M:\ to that OS you created it with, not to the booted recovery environment.
Somehow, you've got to make the recovery environment find those files in M:\
try booting it and doing multiple dir commands to find out what letters it's seeing everything as.
If letters aren't "set in stone" in the registry, the running OS will use the letters in alphabetical sequence from C: for each device as it detects it.
If you've got the space, you could create multiple partitions, till the recovery environment detects an M:\ then make sure a copy of the files is located there (use volume "labels" so you know which is which, otherwise it could be even more confusing.)

That's what I thought. There are 2 txt files in there that have a "M" designation attatched in a few lines, almost looks like a config file. When I get home in about an hour I will see if I can attach them to this post.

Alternatively, if you can find them all, you could edit those M:\...... references in the recovery files to fit whatever it's seeing that partition as now.

Here are the contents of the 2 txt files
